Thanks so much to all of you who made our First Friday sale such a success!
Now that we have some extra space on the racks, we're hard at work stocking lots more winter inventory. There'll be plenty to choose from so come on by!

You name it, we'd like to have it. Clean out everybody's closet and come on over. We especially need children's winter clothes. Also, shoes are a hot sell er and I don't need to tell you...we can never have too many shoes.

Here's a refresher on our buying program:

Do the first cut for us. Don't bring anything with problems...spots, stains, smelly, outdated...you know the drill.

We do our store credit buying Monday thru Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm. You don't need an appointment but our buying is on a first come, first served basis so you may have to wait a few minutes (Hint: we have TWO buyers here on Monday and Wednesday so if you're pressed for time, those days are your best bet)

As a rule, we don't buy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There's often only one employee in the shop and it's impossible to give our customers the atte ntion they deserve if we're up front buying. Thanks for understanding.

We want to buy your clothes. If your schedule prevents you from coming in during normal buying hours, just give me a call (my cell is 770-539-1911) and we'll work out a time.

Dog Days

Meet Jake Glazer. This little bundle of Aussie/Border Collie/who-knows-what joy came to us from the new Hall County Animal Shelter on Barber Road. It's an adventure for all of us since we've never had a puppy before. With any luck, he'll have us trained soon.

Did you know that the post office will deliver their boxes (such as their Priority and Flat Rate boxes) to your house for free? You can order up to 500 of each type of box. The minimum is 10 boxes. It takes about 7 to 10 business days to a rrive and both the boxes and the delivery is totally free!

It's Hanukkah!

Hanukkah is the most widely celebrated American Jewish holiday , possibly because it is a fun, child-centered occasion. It is celebrated with excellent food, an exchange of gifts, and the lighting of beautiful menorahs (special Hanukkah candelabras) filled with brightly colored candles. Unlike some of the other Jewish holidays, which require intense spiritual reflection or elaborate preparation, it is easy to celebrate.

It commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by foreign forces. The celebration also reaffirms the continuing struggle to live by God's commandments and to lead Jewish lives. Hanukkah begins every year on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of "Kislev." This year, the 25th of Kislev corresponds to the evening of December 11th, 2009.



Traditionally, food prepared in oil- latkes (potato pancakes) and jelly donuts- are served.

The Gainesville Evening Optimist Club's 53rd Annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Fundraiser is in full swing. You'll find beautiful trees of all sizes and hand crafted wreaths at the tree lot on Browns Bridge Road next to Gallery (Wolfman's) Furniture.

The Gainesville Evening Optimist Club is dedicated to serving the kids of our area and your tree purchase helps further that mission. Stop by the tree lot any time...if there's no one there, you can just pick out your tree and drop a check through the "Honest John" slot in the door. How's that for easy?

It's heartwarming to see how many people step up to help others during this season of giving. We get lots of folks in shopping for needy families. May I make a suggestion? Why not give a N2N gift certificate as part of your Angel Tree gift?

Art with heart

If you're shopping in downtown Gainesville, be sure to stop by the Georgia Artists with Disabilities art exhibit at The Arts Council's Smithgall Arts Center, 331 Spring St. (the Depot behind Hunt Tower.) Work from more than 50 disabled Georgia artists is showcased. It runs through Dec. 3 and it's free.

As beautiful as a Christmas tree is to look at, it is also a magnet for pets. Whether they are climbing it, toppling it, or attempting to eat it, pets love Christmas trees. Live or artificial, you are going to need a plan for protecting your tree from the wild animals who inhabit your home. Tour of Homes

The Christmas Tour of Homes benefits Gainesville High School's Drama Department. It's from 1-5 p.m. on December 6. Houses in Gainesville on the tour are Eddie and Becky Martin's, 1071 Green Street Circle, Phillip and Lydia Sartain's, 696 Dixon Drive, Darrell and Denise Rochester's, 965 Green Street Circle and Kent Tench's, 731 Crestview Terrace.

Baked Apples with Cinnamon Sauce

5 tablespoons softened butter
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
4 apples (any variety but Red Delicious) peeled, halved, and cored, a thin sliver cut off bottoms so apples sit flat
1 (15 ounce) container 9-inch pie crusts
1 egg white
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cornstarch

Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 425 degrees.
Mix 3 Tbs. of butter, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon and all the nuts in a small bowl. Spoon a portion of the mixture into each hollowed-out apple core.
For boxed pie crusts, unroll one of the dough sheets onto a floured work surface. Pulling on sides of dough to straighten rounded edges, roll it into an approximate 12-inch square, then cut the dough into four 6-inch squares; brush the perimeter of each square with egg white. Set an apple half on each square. Bring up the 4 corners of dough around the apple and pinch edges to seal. Place on a large (at least 18- by 12-inch) parchment-covered baking dish. Brush dumpling tops and sides with egg white; sprinkle with sugar. Repeat process with remaining apples and dough.

Bake dumplings until pastry sets and starts to turn golden brown, about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 and bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes longer.
While apples bake, bring 1 cup water, the remaining 2 Tbs. butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp. cinnamon to boil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Dissolve cornstarch in 2 tsps. water; whisk into hot syrup for a smooth sauce. Cover, keep warm.

For each serving, spoon a portion of sauce on a dessert plate. Set apple dumpling over warm sauce; serve immediately.

I've discovered that often those who would most benefit from resale shopping don't know about us. They spend their meager clothing budget at cut-rate discount stores where the clothing is poorly made and wears out in no time. The same money goes MUCH further here at N2N and the items are well-made name brands and mall brands that are far more durable and (IMHO) cuter, too.

Very Best Mac and Cheese

Ernestine Dubose makes what is undoubtedly the best macaroni and cheese I've ever tasted. She's constantly being asked to make it for church socials, wedding receptions, family reunions and any other special occasion. She generously gave me her recipe, just in time for Thanksgiving. I've added it to the recipe blog that I put together for our daughter Molly when she moved to Mississippi last summer. Click here to go to it.

Also, CBS's Sunday Morning had an entire feature dedicated to mac and cheese. Click here to see it.

I also came across this quick and easy corn casserole in case you're looking for another side dish for Thanksgiving dinner.

Awesome and Easy Creamy Corn Casserole

Ingredients
1/2 cup butter, melted
2 eggs, beaten
1 (8.5 ounce) package dry corn bread mix
1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
1 (14.75 ounce) can creamed corn
1 cup sour cream

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and lightly grease a 9x9 inch baking dish.
In a medium bowl, combine butter, eggs, corn bread mix, whole and creamed corn and sour cream. Spoon mixture into prepared dish.
Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the top is golden brown.
