Next to Newsletter - Monday, January 17, 2011

What a week! All of us at N2N were snowed in until Thursday. If you came earlier in the week and we were closed, we apologize.

We're now back, full steam ahead, putting out more winter wear as well as spring fashions. Hope to see you soon!

What's On Sale?

30% OFF YELLOW tags
75% OFF BLUE tags
Clearance- PURPLE tags

There is a whole new sidewalk rack and we're putting out the first of the spring inventory (how's THAT for wishful thinking?)

We'll also be doing the Wild Card Sale this week- pick a card to determine where your discount is: 30% off tops? 50% off one item of your choice? 30% off shoes and bags? 30% off your entire purchase? Draw a card and find out!

The Coke Lady Returns!

Great news! Many of you know about the Coke Lady (so nicknamed because of her employer)- she brings gorgeous plus size fashions and size 9-9.5-10 shoes.

She brought us a car load of magnificent name brand fashions on Saturday, January 8. Because we were closed for several days during Snowpacolypse 2011, a lot of what she brought is still in the shop- it's not too late to get some wonderful Coke Lady bargains!

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Arthur's latest was published on December 11th. Click here to read his
comprehensive overview of free (FREE!) applications.

I'm back from my month-long hiatus with a column about Costa Rica and emergency preparedness (there's a connection, I promise!)

The Good News Network provides a "Daily Dose of News to Enthuse." It is a clearinghouse for the gathering and dissemination of positive compelling news stories from around the globe. Daily stories will confirm what we already believe: good news itself is not in short supply; the advertising of it is.

Click
here and be sure to read the story of the pilot who refused to take off until the passenger headed to his grandson's funeral could make it through the gate. As the pilot told him: "They can't go anywhere without me and I wasn't going anywhere without you. Now relax. We'll get you there. And again, I'm so sorry." If you didn't have a reason to fly Southwest before, you do now!

West Hall High School's award winning Spartan Players present "Seussical," at 7 p.m. Jan. 20-21 and 2:30 p.m. Jan. 22-23 in the West Hall High School theater, 5500 McEver Road in Oakwood. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For more info, call 770-967-9826, ext. 350. This is a great show for introducing your little ones to live theater and fun for everyone who's ever loved Dr. Seuss!

Vista Print is offering 11 office freebies that normally sell for $5 to $25. Through Jan. 31, 2011, you can get up to 10 of the following items free when you pay shipping and handling:
  • 250 business cards
  • T-shirt
  • 100 postcards
  • 1 banner
  • 1 rubber stamp
  • 1 car door magnet
  • 1 lawn sign
  • 1 pen
  • 140 return address labels
  • 10 invitations and announcements
  • 25 small magnets
If you upgrade in any way, extra fees apply. Upgrade fees are clearly marked. Vista Print has been N2N's vendor for business cards for years and we've always been pleased. Don't bother paying extra for a shipping upgrade- they actually ship much faster than indicated on the form.

Anthropomorphics

Arthur sent us the link to some really funny animal voice overs courtesy of the BBC. Click here.

What's for Dinner?

Donna Orkin in Jackson, Mississippi sent us some wonderful recipes for "dump" soups- everything is in a can or container- all you have to do is dump it together.

Here's my favorite of them all:

Crab Bisque

1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of asparagus soup
2 cups milk
1 cup half & half
1 can crab meat, drained
1/3 cup dry white wine or sherry

Dump everything in a pot, heat and serve.
This is especially good served in bread bowls!

Wise Words

It is no use to grumble and complain;
It's just as cheap and easy to rejoice;
When God sorts out the weather and sends rain -
Why, rain's my choice.

Let's work to get the word out: friends don't let friends shop retail!

...and remember Senior Discount Day- each Monday, everyone 55 and over gets 30% off their cash purchases.

Computer Problems?

Arthur says that if you have an old computer- whether a desktop or laptop- and you have data on it that you'd like to have removed or copied, he can do that for you.

If you've recently changed computers or plan to soon, he can extract those photos and documents you may have thought were lost for good. Well, they are not lost and your computer may even be salvageable. Let him take a look at it. He can also replace a small or defective hard drive or add a second one if you've run out of storage space.

He reminds you that just as with your car, your computer requires periodic tune-ups, usually twice a year. He can clean the junk from your system, check it for viruses and malware and make it run faster. Even if you think yours is running fine, he can make it run faster. His rates are reasonable and he stands behind his work.

Call Computer House Calls at 770-540-5100 or email him at

arthur@glazerthepctech.com. Your computer will thank you.

That's it for now. Remember-email goes both ways...

If you run across any exceptional bargains or impressive new products, let us know. We'll put the word out!

Have a remarkable week!

As I write this, we're all getting ready for a whopper of a snowstorm...or, maybe not. We won't know for sure until it gets here. Just so you know, here's N2N's snow day policy: We'll do everything within our power to be open. Just to be safe, though, if Gainesville City Schools are closed, please call us first (770-534-9070) to be sure we could make it in.

What's On Sale?

Nah, just kiddin'...here's what's really on sale:
30% OFF YELLOW tags
75% OFF BLUE tags
Clearance- PURPLE tags
There will be a whole new sidewalk rack and we're going to be putting out the first of the spring inventory (how's THAT for wishful thinking?)

Great news! Many of you know about the Coke Lady (so nicknamed because of her employer)- she brings wonderful plus size fashions and size 9-9.5-10 shoes.

She brought us a car load of magnificent name brand fashions on Saturday, January 8.

There's everything- tops, bottoms, shoes, boots, jackets, purses, night wear and a TON of costume jewelry. Many still have the retail tags attached!
Stop in soon for the best selection.

Hey, if you're snowed in and looking for something to do, why not make good use of your time and clean out some closets?

Remember our mantra: Recycle Reuse Resale!

Here's a refresher on our buying program:
Do the first cut for us. Don't bring anything with problems...spots, stains, smelly, outdated...you know the drill.

We do our store credit buying Monday thru Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm. You don't need an appointment but our buying is on a first come, first served basis so you may have to wait a few minutes (Hint: we have TWO buyers here on Monday and Wednesday so if you're pressed for time, those days are your best bet.)

As a rule, we don't buy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There's often only one employee in the shop and it's impossible to give our customers the attention they deserve if we're up front buying. Thanks for understanding.

We want to buy your clothes. If your schedule prevents you from coming in during normal buying hours, just give us a call and we'll work out a time.

A great big mazel tov goes out to N2N's Rachel Glazer from North Hall High School and GHS's Isaac Hopkins. On January 8th in Warner Robbins, GA they were both elected Student State Officers for the Georgia Thespian Association. This is quite a responsibility- they and the five other SSOs from throughout the state will be charged with planning a conference for 3000 young actors in 2012. They will also represent Georgia at the National Thespian Conference in Nebraska this summer. Good going, kids!

What's for Dinner?

Donna Orkin in Jackson, MS sent us this recipe. Donna's the best cook this side of the Food Network. She'll be sending us some of her favorites from time to time. Thanks, Donna!

This recipe came at just the right time- it'll be a nice alternative to Snow Day Chili.

2 cans diced tomatoes

1 8 oz can of tomato sauce

2 zucchinis, sliced

And our souls a little off-kilter

Bargain Books

With the new semester about to begin, here's a great resource for all you college students...and parents of college students:

Bigwords.com is a price comparison engine for textbooks, books, DVDs, games, music and school supplies. Unlike normal textbook stores, Bigwords doesn't sell a thing. They scour all of the best stores, compare prices, and show you where to buy your books to save the most money. On average, they save customers $225.

Instead of finding one price for one item at a time, Bigwords takes all of your items, runs every combination of those items at every store, automatically calculates coupons, promotions, and shipping, and shows you the best possible combination of stores to save you the most money.

Extra Savings

When you place an online order, there’s always that little coupon code box towards the end, beckoning you to enter a promotional code or gift certificate number to reduce your total. You know the box I’m talking about, right? Do you ever leave it blank? If you do, then you’re paying too much.

Click here to see how to make sure you never leave that box blank again, along with some tips to maximize your online coupon usage.

What's for Dinner?

This family pleasing recipe was posted on Facebook by our friend and long-time N2N customer Stacey Hart. Thanks, Stacey!

Spaghetti Pie

6 ounces dry spaghetti

2 tbsp butter or margarine

2 beaten eggs

1/3 cup Parmesan cheese

1 cup cream-style cottage cheese or Ricotta cheese

1 lb. ground beef or turkey

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 8-ounce crushed tomatoes, undrained

1 6-ounce tomato paste

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp oregano

1/2 tsp garlic salt

1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese ( 2 ounces)

Cook spaghetti according to directions. Drain. There should be about 3 cups. Stir butter or margarine into hot spaghetti. Stir in beaten eggs and Parmesan cheese. Form spaghetti mixture into a crust in a greased 10-inch pie plate. Spread with cottage or Ricotta cheese.

In skillet, cook ground beef and onions until meat is brown and onions are soft. Drain off fat. Stir in undrained tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, oregano, and garlic salt; heat through.

Put meat mixture on top of spaghetti crust. Bake, uncovered at 350 for 20 mins. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese; bake till melted about 5 mins. Makes 6 servings.

And for dessert, try Pecan Tassies, sent to us by Joyce Jones:

1/3 cup dark Karo syrup
1/2 cup butter
1 cup powered sugar

Bring all ingredients to a boil-remove from heat
Add 1 cup chopped pecans
Spoon into Athens Fillo cups (there are 30 to a package- they're found in the freezer section)
Bake at 350 degrees for 5 minutes. Makes 35-40
