I'm writing this week's newsletter from Jackson, MS. We came over for the weekend to see our daughter, Molly, who started working here in June. For the past month she's stayed with a wonderful family until the girl whose room she's subletting moved out of the house she'll be sharing with two roommates.
So we drove out to check out the town and help Molly get settled
into her new digs.
Jackson's a lovely town although right now it's sort of like living in a steam cabinet. Locals tell me this blast furnace heat is standard for summer.
One of the first things we did was venture out to investigate the local resale shops. The first we visited was a vintage shop called The Orange Peel. It's in a funky, artsy section of town called Fondren. There were wonderful deals on furniture and decorative items. The clothes were a little more of a challenge since they weren't arranged by size, just color. I know that looks good, but it doesn't make for very efficient shopping.

Know how Gainesville has painted roosters and Athens has decorated bulldogs? Jackson has catfish.
We also visited the Junior League's resale store, called the Bargain Boutique. Nice people and a cute logo.

We'll buy them for cash. You can bring in other clothing and accessories as well- we'll buy them for credit as usual. Please pack your shoes separately and let us know that you have cash items when you come in. Buying hours are the same: Monday thru Thursday 10AM to 4PM and other times by prior arrangement.We'll be buying shoes for cash all week- through Thursday, July 9th. The home alarm system you may not know you have
This great idea from wisebread.com:
Home alarm systems can be expensive. A basic alarm system can be hundreds of dollars. But, chances are, you already own a pretty good alternative.
Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this: Put your car keys beside your bed at night.
If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get into your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key chain fob. It works if you park in your driveway or garage.
If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the intruder won't stick around. After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.
And then, another great tip...
Also, you can extend the distance your alarm will activate by holding the key fob under your chin making contact with your skin. Your body is a natural antenna and will help extend the length you can extend the signal.

Zucchini Bread
Here's a great way to use up all that excess zucchini that our gardens produce this time of year.
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
2 1/4 cups white sugar
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups grated zucchini
1 cup chopped walnuts
Grease and flour two 8 x 4 inch pans. Preheat oven to 325.
Sift flour, salt, baking powder, soda, and cinnamon together in a bowl.
Beat eggs, oil, vanilla, and sugar together in a large bowl. Add sifted ingredients to the creamed mixture, and beat well. Stir in zucchini and nuts until well combined. Pour batter into prepared pans.
Bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on rack for 20 minutes. Remove bread from pan, and completely cool.
