Arthur took the week off from writing his Computer Care column. However, he sends this, exclusive to the Next to Newsletter- some free tools and computing advice that he has not yet written about in any of his columns. You saw it here first. Arthur says:

Freemake is a free, easy and useful tool for changing the format of videos you may have. It has lots of tutorials built-in and will show you how to create You Tube videos, change froman iPad/iPod format to a Windows video, from avi to mpeg or wmv and lots more.

Another good free utility to have is TrackMeNot, a browser add-on that will stop Firefox or Chrome from following you on the Internet with use of many popular search engines. Among other reasons to install it, your spam intake will be reduced. For Firefox go to http://trackmenot.org/

If you still use Internet Explorer, we need to talk. Try one of the others.

Know the difference between an UPGRADE and an UPDATE. The former requires payment. The latter is free and is just a newer version of what you already have.

For example, if you use the free and popular Advanced system Care and see a link to an UPGRADE, they are trying to sell you the paid version.

But if you see a pop-up telling you of an UPDATE, it is OK to download it. That's just a the latest of the free versions, newer than the one you already have installed. It will almost always overwrite the existing version, but may ask your permission first; just agree to it.

Use System Restore. It is built in to every version of Windows. It is Microsoft's "Way-Back Machine" (for those of you who remember Saturday cartoons from way back!). What it does is create a reference point for you to go back to should something go awry with your computer.

The 16th annual Bear on the Square Mountain Festival will be an incredible weekend of music and art held in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains on April 21-22. During that weekend, old time and bluegrass music will fill the Historic Public Square in Dahlonega. There will be on-stage performances by local, regional, and national musicians on Saturday and Sunday, and a juried artist's marketplace features traditional mountain art and crafts. Extensive music workshops, a Sunday morning Gospel Jam, a Saturday night street dance, a live country auction on Friday night, family activities, and food complete the offerings. Whatcha eatin'?

I've been on Weight Watchers a long time now and I'm always on the look-out for program-friendly dessert recipes. I may have lost weight but I haven't lost my sweet tooth. I heard about this dish at my last meeting, tried it
and loved it. You will too.

3-Ingredient Cobbler

2-bags frozen cherries (or one bag cherries and 1 pint blueberries or you can use frozen mixed berries, peaches...the combinations are endless. Just be sure to use fruit without added sugar)

1 box yellow or white cake mix (for the real WW purist, Pillsbury even makes a sugar-free mix)

1 can (or 12 ounces) diet ginger ale or Sprite Zero or any light-colored diet soda.

Place fruit in a 9 x 13 casserole dish. In a bowl, mix together cake mix and soda until there aren't many lumps. Pour over fruit and bake for 40 minutes in a pre-heated 350 degree oven or until lightly browned.

Serves 12. Points Plus: 3 to 4 (depending on the kind of cake mix you choose)

Family Fun!

Here are just a few of the activities going on at Elachee this spring. Check 'em out!

Stars Over Elachee at Chicopee Lake 7:30-9:30 p.m. March 31. Learn about astronomy and how to use a telescope to view the night sky. You'll receive an observing log and star chart to assist in seeing constellations, stars, planets, and even moon craters and Apollo landing sites. It's a good time to view Jupiter, Venus and Mars and Saturn. Suggested for adults and children ages 8 and up. Bring a flashlight and pencil. Elachee Nature Science Center, 2125 Elachee Drive, Gainesville. $10 for adults, $5 children. Call to register and reserve telescopes. 770-535-1976.

First Saturday Hike at Elachee: "Spring Wildflowers," 10-11:30 a.m. April 7. Join a naturalist on a guided hike in the Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve and learn about Georgia's native spring wildflowers. $5 adults, $3 children 2-12, Elachee members free, includes museum admission.

Elachee's Trail Crew Work Day 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 7. Bring water, lunch, gloves and rain gear. Tools, training and afternoon refreshments provided. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Call to preregister. 770-535-1976. .

Elachee's Backyard Conservation Workshop, 10 a.m. to noon March 31. Learn the rudiments of composting, explore ways to use barrels and cisterns to capture and store rain water or create a new rain garden in your yard.

N2N Family News

Great news! Our Rachel, a senior at North Hall High School, won the Zone-level Optimist Oratorical Competition last Saturday. This involved writing and delivering a 5-minute speech on the topic:

"How my optimism helps me overcome obstacles."

The next competition is in three weeks. The winner there goes to State...and a $2500 scholarship! Go, Rach!

More great news! Molly has been accepted in the Towson University School of Jewish Studies graduate program! That's in Baltimore. She'll be earning a Master's degree in Jewish Education.

She's also a finalist for a Wexner Foundation Fellowship, which would take care of all of her expenses. She interviews for that in April. We're pulling for you, Molly!

Malware Scam

Arthur sent us this Malware Bytes:

"Please be wary and do not talk to any tech support agents who cold call you with a proposition to fix your PC. We have received many complaints from upset customers who have had their credit cards charged for hundreds of dollars. These fake PC technicians will call users via telephone or Skype and ask to do a remote access to their PC to diagnose any problems by looking for malware. These tricksters will use Malwarebytes Free edition to clean your PC and then will try to upsell you a yearly tech support plan.

Do not let anyone who cold calls you remotely access your PC or give them your credit card number! We are saddened to hear these stories from our users and it goes without saying that we do not knowingly affiliate with any fraudulent companies. If you have been victim to one of these, or have any information about a scam you saw on the web, please report it to us so our team can investigate."

Youth Art Month

It's Youth Art Month at The Quinlan.

Quinlan Visual Arts Center gallery spaces will be devoted to the display of youth art entries from March 16 through April 14 sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville. There will be a reception 5:30–7 p.m. on March 16.

Gainesville and Hall County middle and high schools have submitted their best artwork from students grades sixth-12. Winners will receive scholarship awards from the Charles J. Thurmond Youth Art Scholarship fund. A non-competitive art exhibition for elementary school students grades 3–5 also will also be held and all will receive special certificates of recognition. Want to make a classic Irish treat? Try this:

St. Pat's Potato Candy

Yes, there really is potato in this classic Irish treat, though you'd never know by tasting. Rolled in coconut, these mini spud-shaped sweets make a perfect St. Patrick's Day dessert.

Ingredients

1 large potato

Pinch of salt

2 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 to 5 cups confectioners' sugar

5 cups sweetened coconut flake

Peel the potato and boil it in water until soft. In a mixing bowl, mash the cooked potato with the salt and butter. Then -- this is key -- let it cool completely, or else it will melt the sugar when you add it.

Mix in the vanilla extract and 4 cups of sugar. At this point, the mixture should be stiff. If it isn't, add more sugar.

Sprinkle half of the coconut onto a waxed-paper-covered surface and turn the potato mixture onto it. Roll the batter until all of the coconut has been mixed in, then shape teaspoonfuls into small balls.

Roll the balls individually in the remaining coconut. Chill the finished candies until you're ready to serve them. Makes about 4 dozen
