Next to Newsletter- Monday, November 28, 2011

I hope everyone had a happy, family-filled Thanksgiving. We traveled to Winston- Salem to spend the holiday with Molly in her new home. Many, many thanks to Lisa and the N2N crew for holding down the fort!

As I write this, the weather announcer is talking about the possibility of snow showers in a day or so. Even though there probably won't be any accumulation, it's always a joy to watch. It makes me want to bake cookies and stir pots of chili. Here at N2N we're ready for the cold with racks of sweaters, jackets, scarves and other good chilly weather wear. Come on in and stock up!

Gluten-Free

More and more, we hear people talking about their attempts to live gluten-free, omitting many or all goods containing gluten (a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species, including barley and rye) from their diets. Often it's because of wheat allergies and celiac disease. Here are a couple of excellent articles sent in by Evelyn Asher. They answer a lot of questions about living with and without gluten. Click here and here. Thanks, Ev!

Angel Trees

It's heartwarming to see how many people step up to help others during this season of giving. We get lots of folks in shopping for needy families. May I make a suggestion? Why not give a N2N gift certificate as part of your Angel Tree gift?

I've discovered that often those who would most benefit from resale shopping don't know about us. They spend their meager clothing budget at cut-rate discount stores where the clothing is poorly made and wears out in no time. The same money goes MUCH further here at N2N and the items are well-made name brands and mall brands that are far more durable and (IMHO) cuter, too.

We'll be glad to convert some of your store credit to a gift certificate or sell you a credit to use as part of your Christmas giving. You'll know the recipient will be able to find great fashions and learn about the many benefits of resale shopping at the same time.

Now, that's the gift that keeps on giving!
Tree Time

The Gainesville Evening Optimist Club's 55th Annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Fundraiser is going full force. You'll find beautiful trees of all sizes and hand crafted wreaths at the tree lot on Browns Bridge Road next to Gallery (Wolfman's) Furniture.

The Gainesville Evening Optimist Club is dedicated to serving the kids of our area and your tree purchase helps further that mission. Stop by the tree lot any time...if there's no one there, you can just pick out your tree and drop a check through the "Honest John" slot in the door. How's that for easy?
Extreme Makeover: Jobs Edition

One in 9 adults in White County is unemployed (and many of the rest are underemployed) but a new home-grown, grass-roots jobs creation plan pairs up those folks with other people who need help.

Say you need a roof patched or some other home or business repair that you can't really afford; The Bridge Church's "Extreme Makeover: Jobs Edition" matches you with someone who can do it, and it pays the worker a living wage drawn from a fund of tax-deductible donations. Everybody wins.

Many thanks to Candice Dyer for letting us know about this program! Click here to find out more. As best as I can tell, the program is currently only in the Cleveland/ White County area but hopefully the idea will catch fire and spread.

Whatcha Eatin'?

Brown Sugar and Spice Glazed Cream Cheese

This is one of my favorite last-minute entertaining recipes. It's a repeat from last year in case you missed it:

I sampled this at Publix and was absolutely blown away! They served it sans nuts on graham cracker squares. I plan to serve mine on the new brown sugar cinnamon RItz crackers. It would also be good on savory crackers.

  • 1 (8-ounce) bar cream cheese
  • 1 (11-ounce) jar Boar’s Head Sugar & Spice Ham Glaze
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  1. Place the cream cheese on a small serving platter with crackers and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, pour the glaze over the top of the cream cheese until it’s covered and the glaze drips over the edges.
  3. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the glaze. Serve with crackers of your choice.
