Next to Newsletter- Monday, August 15, 2011

Good morning, everybody! Most of you now have a full week of back-to-school schedule under your belt. How's it going so far?
Here at N2N we're in full-out Fall mode...stocking the shop with cooler weather fashions. It's not easy when the mercury's pushing 100 but we'll be glad we did when the first chilly morning arrives.
Meanwhile the warm weather styles you need right now have been discounted up to 75% off so you can shop for now and later, too.

What's on sale?

Let's do the Wild Card Sale. Pick a card to find out where your 30% off discount is. It could be pants and shorts, shoes and bags, infant wear, dresses and sets, even storewide...who knows?

And we believe in do-overs. If you don't like your first card, feel free to draw again!

BAKE SALE FOR BILLY

Many of you know N2N's Pennie. Tragedy struck two weeks ago when her husband, Billy, was involved in a terrible workplace accident. He is currently hospitalized in Alpharetta in ICU.

Here at N2N, we're trying to help Pennie with gas expenses for traveling back and forth to be with Billy. That's why we're having a BAKE SALE FOR BILLY. Today we have my homemade walnut brownies. Later in the week we'll feature chocolate-chocolate chip cookies. Just pick some up for a donation. Everything goes to Pennie and Billy. Your donations and your prayers are appreciated more than you'll ever know.

Want to help? The next time you bake, double the recipe, package some up in individual servings and drop them off at N2N. We'll include them in the bake sale and, again, it all goes to help Pennie and Billy.

Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Arthur's latest was published on August 6. Click here to read " Beware of phony anti-virus apps; they're really malware."

My latest column was published August 5. Click here to read "A bird in the hand may run afoul of the law."

Sleep tight

Have trouble sleeping? Here's an excellent sleep tool. I can't take the credit for finding it; Lauren Markovich posted it on Facebook. (Thanks, Lauren!)

You can create your own nature sounds and adjust the volumes, play relaxing games to help ease you to sleep, read and share ideas about stress reduction, relaxation techniques, and sleep-aids on their sleep and relaxation discussion page. Click here to go there.

Tying up loose ends

Fun, fashion & science are all in one place in this quirky site about shoelaces. Whether you want to learn to lace shoes, tie shoelaces, stop shoelaces from coming undone, calculate shoelace lengths or even repair aglets, Ian's Shoelace Site has the answer! Click here.

Carrot Controversy

I love baby carrots, those convenient little prepackaged nubbins that have caused U.S. carrot consumption to increase by 33%. But are they dangerous? Emails have circulated with warnings that they contain dangerous levels of chlorine. Click here to see what the venerable Dr. Weil has to say.

Crush Fest

Crush Fest is a day-long harvest festival celebrating second grape harvest of Yonah Mountain Vineyards - Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Crush Fest is held at the vineyard near Cleveland and will feature grape stomping, vineyard wagon tours and wine tasting. The all-day music schedule will include Curtis Jones with Insomnia, Shoal Creek Bluegrass Band and Chris Bahre and Friends. Local restaurants will provide fine fare, and over 25 vendors will be on site. Admission is $15.00 per person; $5.00 designated drivers; 16 and under free.

Whatcha Eatin'?

This is always one of the favorites at N2N bake sale fund raisers. Cream cheese brownies are deceptively quick and easy to make...and, oh, so yummy!

Cream Cheese Brownies

1 pkg. brownie mix (and oil and eggs as specified on the box)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
8 oz. cream cheese
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Grease 9 x 13 pan.
Soften cream cheese. Add egg, sugar and vanilla and beat until smooth.
Prepare brownie mix according to directions on package. Add 1 cup of chopped walnuts if you like.

Spoon half of mix in pan. Top with cream cheese, add other half of brownie mix and swirl through with spoon.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Cut with a plastic knife- it makes for much neater pieces.
