Need to Know

Self-reliance is a vital key to living a healthy, productive life. To be self-reliant we must master a basic set of skills, more or less making each of us a jack of all trades. Contrary to what you may have learned in school, a jack of all trades is far more equipped to deal with life than a specialized master of only one. Click here to see the list of 50 things everyone should know how to do.

'Night-'Night

Sometimes it's hard to get to sleep. Maybe it's the end of a long, frustrating day and your mind doesn't want to stop wrestling with the afternoon's issues. Maybe there's a loud party down the street. Or maybe your traveling and it's not always easy to drift off in a strange bed.

Just click here to go to a site that produces white noise, those soothing sounds that will relax you and send you to la-la land in no time.

N2N Family News

This is a week of change for the Glazer girls. On Tuesday Rachel leaves for her five week fellowship with the Bronfman Foundation in Israel. We can never find words to adequately thank all of those who helped send her on her way- the Board and congregation of Shalom b'Harim, the Gainesville Evening Optimist Club, the Hall County Optimist Club and those you who gave so generously to Rachel's bake sale fundraiser. You all made her dream a reality. I'm not exaggerating when I say we love each and every one of you.

Meanwhile, Arthur is in Jackson, Miss. helping Molly make her move to Winston- Salem, NC where she'll be working as the Director of Education at Temple Emanuel. We're so proud of you, little girl!

French onion dip and ranch dressing dip are BBQ mainstays, but they can turn carrot sticks into a fattening snack in zero seconds flat. Trade out processed, fattening store-bought dips for this healthy, easy-to-make dip, without sacrificing the creamy texture or flavorful taste.

Rosemary White Bean Dip

Ingredients:

1 can white beans
½ cup olive oil
juice from 1 lemon
five-six sprigs rosemary
salt

Equipment:

Food processor

Directions:

Drain liquid from white beans. Combine beans, olive oil and lemon juice in foodprocessor. Pluck leaves from sprigs of rosemary and add to mixture. Add a dash or two of salt.

Process until mixture is smooth (like hummus) and rosemary is completely chopped/blended in.

Best if refrigerated and served cold. Serve with chips, crackers, carrots or celery.

The Forgotten Treasures of a Generation X Childhood

"Generation X"- children of the 1970s and 1980s. Those are goofy decades to embrace, with their avocado refrigerators and wood-paneled rec rooms, their leg warmers and shoulder pads. Home Made Sweetened Condensed Milk

This is a great recipe to keep on hand when you're in the mood for Key Lime Pie and don't have any Eagle Brand Milk in the pantry. I made this recipe and then used it to make coconut macaroons and it worked just as well as the canned condensed milk.

3/4 c. sugar

1/3 c. water
4 tbsp. butter

Cook until it starts to bubble. Put in blender and add 1 cup powdered milk. Blend until smooth. Equals 1 can of sweetened condensed milk.

Nothing says summer like outdoor movies. It looks as thought the ones at the Arts Depot here in Gainesville have been discontinued but there are other venues nearby.

Try Summer Movies Under The Stars in Dahlonega. On June 10 at dusk they'll be showing "Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules." It's at Hancock Park and admission is free.

There's also the Summer Movie Series in Cornelia. It starts at dusk. "The Goonies" will be playing on June 17 and "The Last Airbender" on July 15. It's at City Park in Cornelia and it's free.

Flash Mobs

I love flash mobs...first the frozen people in Grand Central Station, then the T-Mobile ads in London and the Hanukkah flash mob in Jerusalem. Here's one from St. Patrick's Day in Sidney, Australia's Central Station.

So is Gainesville ready for a flash mob? Maybe clogging in Roosevelt Square?
