Faces in the Sand

From Woman's Day: Though sand sculptures are inherently fleeting works of art, an astonishing amount of labor is poured into each project—often requiring teams of architectures or sculptors and nearly 3000 tons of sand per competition. Amongst the most spectacular castles, animals or otherwise themed creations, there exist true masterpieces that appear to come to life on the shore. Showcasing everything from agony to exhilaration, click

Super Savings!

This week CVS has Arm & Hammer 2x liquid laundry detergent 2/$6.99 with your Extra Care Card. Then you get $2.00 back in Extra Bucks. That's like getting them 2/$4.99. But WAIT- it gets better. Click

Grilled Talapia with Mango Salsa

Don't let the list of ingredients fool you. This is super easy, and will receive rave reviews whenever you serve it. The salsa can be made the day ahead to save time. Strawberries can be substituted for the mango if you prefer - both are excellent. Combine leftover salsa with some drained black beans the next day for lunch.

BTW- Publix has mangos buy one get one free through Wednesday.

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 (6 ounce) tilapia fillets
1 large ripe mango, peeled, pitted and diced
1/2 red bell pepper, diced
2 tablespoons minced red onion
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
2 tablespoons lime juice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste

Whisk together the extra-virgin olive oil, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, parsley, garlic, basil, 1 teaspoon pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a bowl and pour into a resealable plastic bag. Add the tilapia fillets, coat with the marinade, squeeze out excess air, and seal the bag. Marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour.

Prepare the mango salsa by combining the mango, red bell pepper, red onion, cilantro, and jalapeno pepper in a bowl. Add the lime juice and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, and toss well. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat, and lightly oil grate.

Remove the tilapia from the marinade, and shake off excess. Discard the remaining marinade. Grill the fillets until the fish is no longer translucent in the center, and flakes easily with a fork, 3 to 4 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the fillets. Serve the tilapia topped with mango salsa.

Fancy Fast Food

This from TIME: If you thought fast food had to be lowbrow, think again. Not when you can enjoy tapas from White Castle, sushi from Popeye's or quiche from Burger King. Of course, chains don't actually serve those delicacies, but a new website offers the next best thing: teaching budget foodies how to take standard drive-thru fare and slice, strip, mix and otherwise recreate it to look gourmet.

Fancy Fast Food offers meticulously detailed, elegantly photographed recipes that can transform, say, a Big Mac Extra Value Meal into "McSteak & Potatoes" (the "potatoes" being the hamburger bun and french fries pureed in a food processor.) The large Coke, of course, gets served in a wine glass.

Spotlight on Carole

Our friend, Carole Scheel, lives in Franklin, N.C. She visits N2N when she comes to see her big, happy family here in Gainesville. She has spent her entire working life as an accountant, and a darn good one, at that. She's worked for big businesses and non-profits. Until now.

For the first time ever, she's unemployed and she doesn't like it one little bit. She's turning these lemons into lemonade by taking this opportunity to do what she always said she'd do "some day"- move to Gainesville. So if you know of any accounting or other related positions that are open in the area, please let Carole know. Her email is
catscheel@yahoo.com. Good luck, Carole!

Win a Home in the Country!

How would you like to own a 4200 sq. ft. log home on five secluded acres outside of Toccoa? How about if it only cost $105.00? Impossible? Not really...

My cousin, Angela Dyer, and her family are the home's owners. Right now isn't the optimum time to have $1M house on the market. After trying to sell for a couple years, they're now trying a different approach. They're RAFFLING the house off. The tickets are $100.00 each plus a $5.00 service fee. 7500 tickets will be sold.

The odds of winning a Megamillions jackpot are 1 in 175,711,536. The odds of winning Angela's house is 1 in 7500. I like those odds.

The raffle is being handled by Seed Sowers, a charity that works with people with special needs. To see all the details, pictures and specs on the house and the raffle, click
here. In the words of the New York Lottery: Hey, you can't win if you don't play.

Now Playing:

If you know me, you know how I feel about community theatre. It's a magical, economical way to introduce your children to culture that doesn't come out of a cable. This week there's so much to see:

There's "The Music Man" at the Historic Holly Theater in Dahlonega. Click
here for more info.

There's "Annie Warbucks" at the GHS Performing Arts Center, a Pam Ware Summer Community Theatre production (need I say more?) Click
here to read the Times article and for more info.

Not to mention: "Headwaters: Birth, Death and Places In-Between," at the Sautee Nacoochee Center. Click
here for more info.

Coming soon: "The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood," a production of Fifth Row Center at the Presentation Point Outdoor Amphitheater at Lake Lanier Islands. Click here for details.

Road Trip!

Planning a road trip? Be sure to check out http://www.roadsideamerica.com/.

You'll find offbeat attractions like Babyland in Cleveland, the tree that owns itself in Athens, the tick museum (I'm not making this up!) in Statesboro and lots more.

It's organized by state so you can plan your whole trip with lots of fun, off-beat stops. The next time we visit Molly in Mississippi, I want to stop at the grave of Miss Baker the space monkey in Huntsville and
see the spooky face in the courthouse window in Carrollton, AL.

What's your favorite roadside attraction? Let us know...and bonus points are added for sending pictures!
