The thrill of shopping without the guilt!
Monday- September 28, 2009
A weekly publication of Next to New Resale Boutique

Good morning!

What's that I see outside? Could it be? It is! SUNSHINE! After a week of gloomy, wet weather, it looks like that's behind us, for the short term at least.

We were heartened by the number of people who came to N2N to shop for families who had lost all of their belongings in the floods in counties south of here. We want to help, too. We'll be glad to offer our employee discount (20%) to anyone who's buying to help a displaced family- just let us know.

We've also established the N2N FLOOD FUND. If you'd like to donate some of your store credit to the fund to help these unfortunate folks, we'll match the amount (if you donate a $10 credit, then N2N will also donate $10) We will hand them out in increments of $25 per family member to help folks get back of their feet. Please help out if you can. We're all in this together...

What's on Sale?

Let's do the Wild Card Sale. Pick a card to find out where your 30% off discount is. It could be pants and shorts, shoes and bags, infant wear, dresses and sets, even storewide...who knows? And we believe in do-overs. If you don't like your first card, feel free to draw again!

Mark Your Calendar!

Storewide Half Price Sale

Friday, October 2

10 AM-6 PM

50% off original price unless already priced less.

Cash, credit/debit card or check only, please. You can use your store credit but the discount won't apply.

Got List/Want List

Last week, our cash buying was for scrubs and, boy, did we get scrubs! We've added an extra rack to hold them all. Mostly, we bought M/L/XL pieces (both tops and bottoms.) Stop by soon for the best selection.

What we need: Coats and jackets. With cool weather moving in, we're selling them as fast as we can put them out. Don't forget to check the coat closet when you're putting together your items to bring to N2N!

Knees are getting bruised; hearts are getting broken...but the bruises heal and hearts mend-almost. "Almost, Maine" will leave you spent from laughter and thoroughly warmed from the inside out.

Books for Soldiers helps supply soldiers with reading materials during downtimes where they are restricted from traveling. If you have a few books to spare, you might want to consider sending a few to this worthwhile organization.

The site reminds us that mail call days are the most anticipated when you’re deployed. So along with the books, consider sending a thank you card along. If you’re unsure about what to send, where to send it or which type of box to use, the site has all the information you need. The site answers many FAQs you may have, and also provides a place to donate if you’d rather do that.

MLIA

Looking for one of those guilty pleasure websites to click around on when you really should be doing something more productive? Molly told me about mylifeisaverage.com and now I check it every day. This celebration of the dull and mundane offers an honest alternative to the fake kingdoms of Facebook updates and Twitter banter and allows users to admit that their life isn't the non-stop party they'd like it to be. Here the ordinary is honored, the tedious chores no one would dare tweet - such as the separation of forks, spoons and knives in dishwasher compartments - are pored over and a life without thrills is admitted to, with each post's averageness commented and voted on. Some entries are sweet, some poignant, some funny, and some just downright puzzling.

Here's my current favorite: "Today, while at the Botanical Gardens, I read a sign that said 'Frog Parking Only. All others will be toad.' Highlight of my day. MLIA."

Worth Repeating

Last week, Cheryl brought in some of her Peanut Butter Pie. I'd forgotten how good it is. A lot of folks have signed up for the newsletter since we ran the recipe a couple of years ago, so here it is again. You can find it and lots of other Next to Newsletter recipes in
Recipes for Molly in Mississippi, a blog I put together for our oldest daughter when she moved to Jackson last summer.

Peanut Butter Pie

1 Graham Cracker Crust

4 oz. Light Cream Cheese, softened

1/2 Cup Peanut Butter (I use extra crunchy)

1/3 cup of sugar or 8 packs of Equal

1/3 cup peanuts, chopped (optional)

1 8 oz. Container Light or Sugar Free Cool Whip

Mix all ingredients well and sprinkle with nuts if desired. Pour into crust and chill. Serve with additional Cool Whip.

Spotlight on: Stoned Elegance

Phyllis Crusoe is a multi-talented lady. In addition to a demanding career with Brenau University, she's also the CEO and chief designer for Stoned Elegance, a great source for custom jewelry at affordable prices.

She's making a gift for one of my girls (I can't say what and I can't say for whom) and I'm absolutely thrilled with the service, the quality and the price. She took my inarticulate description of what I had in mind and made it happen!

She also offers classes, repairs and free consultations. Go to http://www.stonedelegance.com/

Chicken Corn Casserole

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups cooked, diced chicken (chilled or frozen)

1 (11-oz) can Southwestern- or Mexican-style corn (undrained)

1 (10-oz) can mild diced tomatoes and green chiles (undrained)

1 cup corn muffin mix

1/4 cup light sour cream

1/4 cup light mayonnaise

1/4 cup shredded reduced-fat sharp Cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 425°F. Coat 2-quart baking dish with cooking spray.
Combine all ingredients (except cheese) in medium bowl. Transfer mixture to baking dish. Bake 25 minutes.
Remove from oven, sprinkle cheese over top; bake 5 more minutes or until cheese melts. For best results, let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Lighted Glass Blocks

One of the most beautiful holiday craft decorations I've seen is a lighted glass block that I spotted at Cheryl's house a couple of years ago. She had purchased it at a church bazaar.

Using her block as a guide, we made several to sell at the Optimist Club Christmas Tree lot. We bought the blocks at Lowe's and Arthur, who grew up in the glass business, was kind enough to drill the holes for us. You can do your own drilling or order pre-drilled blocks off of the Internet. You can make Christmas decorations or, by using different ribbon, make an adorable nightlight for a baby's room. Click
here for detailed instructions.
