My October 29th column is about Black Dog Syndrome. Click here to read it.

Blackout!

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia on Ridge Rd. is offering special adoption fees for black adult dogs and puppies adopted through
Sunday, November 14.

Typically $100 per animal, the adoption fee for adult black dogs (6 months and older) will be $50, and the adoption fee for black puppies (6 months and younger) will be $75.

Why? Scroll back up and read the column on Black Dog Syndrome...

And while we're on the subject of DOGS

Americans spend $41 billion annually on their pets. A big chunk of that goes for dog toys. Here's one that doesn't cost a thing and has been a big hit with our Ginger.

Most dogs were originally bred to be workers and even today, they'd prefer to earn their keep (and kibble.) This toy has them working for a reward and they'll love it.

Just take an empty water bottle and cut a small hole in the side. Toss in some dry kibble and fasten on the lid. Have your camera ready when Scooter tries to puzzle out the secret of the magic bottle!

Great deal!

This week, Ingles has Kraft Cheese singles, shreds or cubes (6-12 oz) for $2 each. That in itself is a good deal but to get a GREAT deal, click here to print a coupon good for $5 off of the purchase of 5 Kraft cheese and dairy items. You can support Family TIES by getting in on the 50/50 raffle! As part of the yearly Diamonds and Denim fundraiser, we're selling raffle tickets for $5.00 each. At the fundraiser on Nov. 13th (see last week's Next to Newsletter for more about that), one ticket will be drawn- the winner gets HALF of the proceeds for the raffle ticket sales, with the other half going to Family TIES. You don't have to be present to win. You can get your raffle tickets at N2N. Just think- the odds of winning are SO much better than the lottery!

What's for Breakfast?

These are wonderful, fiber rich muffins. They freeze well and are perfect for
on-the-go breakfasts.

3 Cups Fiber One cereal
2 1/2 cups hot water
1 box Krusteaz Fat Free Cranberry Orange Muffin Mix
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Soak cereal in hot water for 5 minutes. Drain cranberries from box. Add muffin mix, cranberries, nuts and baking powder. Spoon 1/4 cup of batter (it is VERY thick!) into 24 muffin cups or drop by 1/4 cups like drop cookies on a cookie sheet. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes. If you're using mini muffin tins, reduce baking time to 12 minutes.

If you're on Weight Watchers, each mini muffin is one point.

Now Playing

Ever been to a performance at the Riverside Military Academy's Sandy Beaver auditorium? No? Then you're in for a treat! This is a remarkable venue and Leanne Kinney, the fine arts director, does a great job of directing her cadets.

This week they present "Forever Plaid":

One of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory, this deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950s on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was.

Singing in
the closest of harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography, the "Plaids" are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the '50s.

Performance dates are Thursday and Saturday, October 28 and 30. Doors open at 7 pm and curtain is at 7:30. Admission is free.

It's never too early to teach your tweens and teens about thrifty shopping. Have them clean out their closets, bring their stuff in to N2N for store credit (don't bring it for them- they need to see the process) and then turn them loose in the shop with a store credit all their own.

I love that "light bulb" moment when a young person realizes they can get awesome name brand apparel for what feels like FREE!

We do store credit buying on a walk-in basis
Monday-Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Call 770-534-9070 for more details.

Nothing ruins your life forever. NOTHING

My friend Harry Bloch posted this essay's link on Face Book. It was written by a mother as an open letter to her daughter after the suicide of a New Jersey college student who killed himself because his room-mate posted an explicit videotape of him.

Please click here to read it and then have your kids read it. It makes a point that I haven't seen emphasized in any of the hundreds of editorials that have been published since this tragedy: Nothing ruins your life forever. NOTHING.
