Meet Carol

Here at N2N, we've known Carol Smith FOREVER. She and her mom Scarlett (and later her daughters Sarah and Natalie) been shopping with us since we were downtown in the mid-1980s. In fact, she recently found a long-lost stash of N2N receipts, added them to the ones in her purse and came up with over $750 in shop receipts- that gave her a $75 shopping spree. Brava, Carol!

Now, Sarah, the sweet toddler we watched grow into a lovely young woman is preparing to graduate from Piedmont College and get married, too. To finance the nuptials, Carol is producing beautiful artwork on, as she says,
 "anything that doesn't move."

Carol says: "I am a self-taught, eclectic artist. I like colorful, happy art and I like to use repurposed objects. I like to give previously loved things a new life. I make glass garden "totems", personalized signs, and other decorative art. My favorite thing to paint is chairs, and I can paint them in colors you like. Lots of people like rocking chairs and time out chairs for their little ones. One of my most popular patterns is painted to look like a quilt, complete with tiny stiches piecing the 'fabric' together.

I also do signs for homes, with special sayings or names.
My motto is 'Embrace your inner quirky!', and that comes out in my bright colored art.

It takes 2-3 weeks for me to do a quilted chair, less for one that is less complicated. For a small child's rocker I usually get $45-$60, and I ship UPS. My favorite chair is also the most expensive, $145. If you're local, I deliver.
If you have a piece of furniture at home that isn't getting the attention it deserves, call me and I will make it a focal piece for the room!

Meanwhile, I'm doing what I do best - yard sale-ing, curb shopping...
and oh yeah, painting!

 Whatcha eatin'?

It was one of those days. Rachel was home from for a day from her summer job at Camp Coleman. She wanted to bake cookies for her fellow counselors but it seemed we were out of almost everything- no butter, only two eggs, no flour...and I didn't want to go to the store if I could avoid it.

So we made survey what we DID have- Bisquick baking mix, oil and pudding mix.

A quick Google search turned up what may well become one of my favorite, most versatile cookie recipes. The recipe calls for vanilla pudding but that we didn't have. So we made the first batch with gingerbread pudding (a specialty product that Jell-O sells in December) rolled in brown sugar and voila! Snickerdoodles!

The second batch (shown above) was made with coconut cream pudding mix with about a 1/2 tsp. of almond extract tossed in. It produced delectable teacakes worthy of Scarlett O'Hara!

Whatcha eatin'?

From Hungry Girl.com- a yummy adaptation of the classic chicken finger recipe inspired by the version that Planet Hollywood serves up.

Cap'n Crunchy Chicken

Ingredients:8 oz. raw boneless skinless lean chicken breast tenders
1/2 cup Cap'n Crunch cereal (original)
1/4 cup
Fiber One bran cereal (original)
3 tbsp. fat-free liquid egg substitute (like
Egg Beaters Original)
2 tbsp.
Best Foods/Hellmann's Dijonnaise
2 tbsp. honey mustard (actual mustard, not dressing)
1/8 tsp. onion powder
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
dash salt
dash black pepper

Directions:

Place Fiber One in a blender or food processor, and grind to a breadcrumb-like consistency. Set aside.

Put Cap'n Crunch in a sealable plastic bag and seal. Using a rolling pin or a can, coarsely crush cereal through the bag. In a wide bowl, combine Fiber One crumbs, crushed Cap'n Crunch, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.

Place chicken tenders in a separate medium bowl. Cover chicken with egg substitute, and flip chicken to coat. Shake off any excess egg substitute, and then coat chicken in the cereal mixture.

Bring a large pan sprayed with nonstick spray to medium heat on the stove. Place coated chicken pieces gently into the pan, spacing them out as much as possible. Cook for 5 minutes, and then carefully flip pieces over. Cook for about 4 additional minutes, until chicken is cooked through.

Combine the Dijonnaise and honey mustard in a small dish, and mix well for a tasty dipping sauce. Enjoy!

New Skills, Made Easy

The web is a powerful resource that can easily help you learn new stuff, whether it's DIY crafts, technology tricks, home improvements or any number of other skills.  You just have to know where to look.  Sure, you can use Google, Yahoo, or Bing to search for sites where you can learn new skills, but this link saves you some time.

Movie Night!

One of my favorite summer activities is the Arts Council's Movies on the Green at the Arts Depot in downtown Gainesville.

Movies begin at dusk on a 35 foot inflatable screen. The gates open at 7:30 pm so that you and your family can enjoy a host of fun activities before the movie including face painting, magicians, art stations and a jump house. There are also food vendors selling everything from hot dogs and pizza to popcorn and ice cream.Bring your quilts, lawn chairs, picnics and frisbees out to enjoy an evening under the stars.

This summer's movies include  "16-Love" (July 13) starring Gainesville's own Chandler Massey (who was recently awarded a Daytime Emmy for his work on "Days of Our Lives")  and "The Lorax." (August 24th).
