New Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

And here's Sparky with his latest catch. Rachel snapped the picture... I was too busy screaming.

eBay Changes

The world's biggest auction site is making some major changes, and you're gonna love them. Whether you buy or sell on eBay, these changes, scheduled for April 19th, will save you money and time. This is a prime example of what can happen with a company listens to its customers. Click here to read Wise Bread's Paul Michael's overview of the changes.

Money Oragami

Every now and then, when Arthur wants to give a little flourish to a monetary gift, he'll fold the bill in the shape of a bow tie. What a great idea. With graduation right around the corner, we'll all be handing out gifts, lots in the form of cash. Here's a way to make your present even more memorable.

Looking for ideas to keep the kids busy during Spring Break? Click here for a couple of great suggestions- there's Critter Camp and Junior Lifeguard Camp compliment of Gainesville Park and Rec. Wilson Orthodontics does so much for our community. Their latest contribution is the opening of a charity spa at their Gainesville location (1220 Sherwood Park Dr.) You can enjoy manicures, pedicures, massage chairs, acrylics, and paraffin treatments in a top of the line spa atmosphere. Sounds good, doesn't it? Well get this- 100% of the proceeds are donated to a charity that you choose! Congratulations, Rachel! She's been chosen from among over 3000 applicants to take part in the Governor's Honors Program at Valdosta State University this summer. She will attend as a theatre major.

Kudos also to Raina Cundiff of Johnson High School. She's the daughter of long-time N2N shopper Mimi Cundiff and she's going to GHP, too!

Since 1968, The Georgia Governor's Honors Program has been one of the leading enrichment programs for intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students in the country. The six week program was almost cut from the budget last year but was saved at the last minute, although it was reduced to a four week format for 2011. Here's a column I wrote about the whole issue in May of 2010.

Whatcha eatin' ?

Now that fresh fruit prices are becoming affordable, it's time to call the kids into the kitchen and put them to work making a fruit pizza.
It's fun to make and even more fun to eat.

Fresh Fruit Pizza

1 (18 ounce) package refrigerated sugar cookie dough
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 medium firm bananas, sliced
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
1 pint fresh strawberries, halved
2 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
1 (11 ounce) can mandarin oranges, drained
1/3 cup orange marmalade
1 tablespoon water

On a greased 14-in. pizza pan, press cookie dough into a 12-in. circle. Bake at 375 degrees F for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack
In a small mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until smooth. Spread over crust. Toss bananas with lemon juice. Arrange the pineapple, strawberries, bananas, kiwi and oranges over cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate for 1 hour. Combine marmalade and water; drizzle over fruit.

New message from Arthur:

Arthur says there are many forms of malware circulating the Internet. Some remain hidden in your computer, wreaking havoc with your system. Others appear as bogus utilities, warning you of non-existent problems. Often they will even give you a specific number of issues - something not possible if you hadn't run any scans with that utility. Others yet, are random pop-ups that you can't close. These all must be dealt with immediately. If they disappear on their own, they will return. They are not self-healing. If not eradicated, they will get worse, eventually blocking you from logging on to Windows, in many cases.

Good morning, everybody! The seasons seem to have leapfrogged straight from winter to summer. Here at N2N we're in high cotton- cotton tops, shorts, sun dresses, capris. There's everything you need for this wonderful warm weather.

What's on Sale?

Monday-Tuesday: 30% OFF infantwear 0-24 months
Wednesday-Thursday: 30% OFF children's clothes 7-20
Saturday-Sunday: 30% OFF Ladies' Dresses and Sets

Cleaning out closets? Here's the 411 on our buying program:

Do the first cut for us. Don't bring anything with problems...spots, stains, smelly, outdated...you know the drill.

We do our store credit buying Monday thru Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm. You don't need an appointment but our buying is on a first come, first served basis so you may have to wait a few minutes (Hint: we have TWO buyers here on Monday and Wednesday so if you're pressed for time, those days are your best bet)

As a rule, we don't buy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There's often only one employee in the shop and it's impossible to give our customers the attention they deserve if we're up front buying. Thanks for understanding.

We want to buy your clothes. If your schedule prevents you from coming in during normal buying hours, just give me a call (my cell # is 770-539-1911) and we'll work out a time.

Thyroid Cancer Alert

Evelyn Asher of Asheville, N.C. sent us this timely tip:

"On Wednesday, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck. Many dentists don't bother to use it. Also, there is something called a "thyroid guard" for use during mammogram. "

"By coincidence, I had my yearly mammogram yesterday. I felt a little silly, but I asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. I asked why it wasn't routinely used. Answer: "I don't know. You have to ask for it." Well, if I hadn't seen the show, how would I have known to ask?"

Whatcha eatin' ?

Our daughter, Molly, sent this great recipe for individual chocolate cakes
microwaved in a mug. It's reported to be the most dangerous cake recipe in the world...

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg beaten
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (microwave safe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and stir. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.

Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.

Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes.

The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed.

Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

This can serve two if you want to feel slightly more virtuous.

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?

Because now we are all only five minutes away from chocolate cake, any time, day or night!

Whatcha eatin' ?

Joyce Jones sent us this great recipe, a whole new take on stuffed cabbage.

"Unstuffed" Cabbage

1 head of cabbage
1 pound ground turkey
1/2 cup chopped onion
3/4 cup instant brown rice
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 cans tomato soup (or one large can crushed tomatoes)
1 can of water
Sprinkling of grated cheese

Chop cabbage, and spread in a 9 x 12 pan sprayed
with Pam. Brown meat with onion. Stir in rice, salt and
pepper; pour over cabbage. Mix soup and water (if using
crushed tomatoes, use full strength) Pour over meat
mixture. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Cover tightly with
foil, and bake at 350 degrees for 1 to 1.5 hours. Boiling the cabbage
first lowers cooking time to 1 hour.
