New Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on October 24th. Click
here to read Arthur's piece on when you should consider reformatting your hard drive...and how to do it yourself.

My Oct. 16th column is about the late, great Lola Glazer.

Made possible through the vision of the Polis-Schutz family, who created the electronic greeting card company
BlueMountain.com, the Starfall reading program is designed to be fun, exciting and confidence-building for young children as they learn to read. Similar to early-reading software you install on your computer (which can cost $15 to $30), the free program helps teach literacy through games. The graphics, sounds and content at Starfall.com are so outstanding you really need to check it out—even if you don’t have any kids around.

HELP WHIP CANCER in OCTOBER

From Oct. 1-31 only, you can purchase pink Pampered Chef products online while supplies last. For each item sold, a $1 donation will be made to the American Cancer Society®. Go to
www.pamperedchef.biz/JanJanskitchen and click on Help Whip Cancer Products, then click on Help Whip Cancer Online Exclusives and place your order! It's that easy.

Want to know more about Pampered Chef? Contact Janice Welborn, our local Pampered Chef Consultant at
welbornmj@comcast.net

Also...this from my sister-in-law, Carolyn:

The Breast Cancer Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn't cost you a thing.
Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. 45,000 clicks= 1 free mammogram.

In case you're like me and tend to be suspicious, this site has been investigated and confirmed by snopes .com- click
here to read their report. Here's the web site- please pass it along to people you know:http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/

Stop by KFC on Monday (10/26) to get a
FREE piece of Kentucky Grilled Chicken. No purchase necessary and no coupon required. Yummy!

Stop by the Sephora counter at your local JC Penney to grab one of two great samples from LORAC. Just take along this printable coupon and pick your choice of TANtalizer Baked Bronzer or Mini Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick (in Glam).

Angel Food

Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief to communities throughout the United States. Each month's menu is different and consists of both fresh and frozen items. There are no applications to complete, no membership fees, no income limits, and no limit to the number of boxes you can purchase.
One of the local order/distribution locations is The Highlands Church on Cleveland Hwy. Click here to see menus, deadlines and prices.

Best Illusion Ever

Arthur sent us this video that claims to be the best illusion ever. It's just a tad creepy- perfect for Halloween week. Click

Homemade Tortillas

There are some things I've never even thought about making from scratch- lollypops, cornflakes, vanilla wafers and, yes, tortillas. Then I came across this recipe and I thought, "Hey, maybe I can make that after all." The resulting tortillas are soft and tasty...give them a try and let me know what you think.

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoons lard (or shortening or margarine)

1 1/2 cups water

Whisk the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a mixing bowl. Mix in the lard with your fingers until the flour resembles cornmeal. Add the water and mix until the dough comes together; place on a lightly floured surface and knead a few minutes until smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.

Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Use a well-floured rolling pin to roll a dough ball into a thin, round tortilla. Place into the hot skillet, and cook until bubbly and golden; flip and continue cooking until golden on the other side. Place the cooked tortilla in a tortilla warmer or wrap in a towel; continue rolling and cooking the remaining dough.

Note: this recipe can be easily halved to make just a dozen tortillas.

Top 20 Foods Evoking Childhood Memories

When I think back to my childhood, I remember Fruit Loops cereal and orange sherbet push-up pops as two of my preferred treats. Click here to see what treats a national survey found to be the all-time favorites. What would you add to the list?

Weekly this 'n' that

Our first week of collecting both essentials and goodies to send to SSgt Latessa Bortner in Saudi Arabia was a huge success- last Wednesday we shipped off a 15-lb. package full of hard candies, nuts, chips, games, toiletries and greeting cards. We're going to try to send out a package each week so please remember Latessa when you're in the grocery store- just pick up a non-chocolate treat such as Jolly Ranchers or flavorings for bottled water. You can scroll down to last week's blog for a complete wish list.

This week, why not get your kids to draw pictures for Latessa? Her mom, Brenda, says her room is bare so let's decorate it with drawings thanking her for her service! Just drop them off at N2N and be sure to sign the card we have for her. Packages will be going out each Wednesday.

Remember to bring in your plastic grocery bags to recycle and register to win a $25.00 store credit. September's winner is JANET MORLEY.

If you'd like to be added to the N2N Hot Flash list and receive freebie and bargain alerts during the week, just email me at
next2new@aol.com.

Each week, we'll be doing cash buying for one area in the shop that really needs inventory. This week, it's SCRUBS.

We'll be buying scrubs for cash all week- through Thursday, October 29th. Check next week's newsletter to see what the next buy-for-cash department will be.

Get a $5.00 store credit to you any time you bring us a new shopper. It's easy. Just bring in your friends who've never tried N2N shopping. When they check out at the register, we'll give YOU a $5.00 credit on the spot.

THEN- at the end of the month we'll hold a drawing of names of everyone who brought us new shoppers. That winner gets a $50.00 store credit. Also, if you brought us the MOST new shoppers, you'll get a $50.00 store credit.

Let's work to get the word out: friends don't let friends shop retail!

This offer was sent out as a N2N Hot Flash a few days ago. It's such a great deal, I thought I'd share with the whole class...

New Favorite Site

As a confirmed bargain shopper, I'm a big fan of Publix's Buy One Get One Free specials. You can check their website each Thursday morning for a complete listing of the coming week's specials. You can also go to www.iheartpublix.com, where they list the specials and then link to sites where you can print manufacturer's discount coupons for many of those items. Last week my $60.00 shopping trip cost me $24.00.

Oh yes, I heart Publix, too!

Goodies for Latessa

Latessa Bortner

Latessa Bortner is a Hall County girl to the core. She graduated from North Hall High School where she performed in the marching band and earned the Girl Scout Gold Award (the equivalent of an Eagle Scout). She attended the University of Georgia, marched in UGA's band and received a degree in math education. After teaching for a year, she enrolled in Georgia Tech where she earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering. To help finance her studies, she joined the Air Force Reserves. Shortly after graduation, her unit shipped out to Saudi Arabia. She will be there until February 2010.

All of us at N2N have known Latessa and her family for over 20 years. After watching this remarkable young lady grow up, we feel a responsibility to do what we can to make her time in service as comfortable as possible. Each week we will be signing cards and collecting items to send to Latessa. One thing that is particularly needed, her mother Brenda reports, is U.S. phone cards in any denomination.

We will also be collecting hard candies (no chocolate, please), mint Life Savers, Tootsie Pops, hot cocoa mix, herbal teas, Healthy Choice soups (especially minestrone), granola bars, trail mix, peanut brittle, Jolly Ranchers, Pringles, single serving tuna packets, single serve drink powders to be used in bottled water, sourdough pretzels, plastic jars of peanut butter, iTunesdownload cards, dried fruit, pictures of the local area showing green foliage and fall colors, the lake etc., Dr. Scholl insoles, Lever 2000 soap with aloe, Gold Bond Powder and recent DVD movies & TV shows.

Latessa and her colleagues are working 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week so there is not much time for reading but puzzle and brainteaser books are a good choice. Keep in mind, Latessa's a rocket scientist, so the more challenging, the better.

Just bring your contributions to N2N and be sure to sign the card at the register while you're there. We'll be sending out packages each Wednesday. Considering this young woman's sacrifice, it's the least we can do.

Read-a-thon!

Hall Book Exchange (1854 Thompson Bridge Rd.) is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Reading Marathon! It will go from 5 pm this Friday, October 23 until 5 pm Saturday, October 24. Lots of coffee to keep you reading!

Pumpkin Surprise

Mary Lou Wingard of Aiken, S.C. sent us this recipe. It's one of the most unusual we've ever featured...a dessert baked inside a whole pumpkin! I haven't tried it yet but Mary Lou says she makes it every year and it's always a hit.

1 medium pumpkin (make sure it will fit in your oven)

Sugar Mixture:
3/4 cu. sugar, 2 tbsp. flour, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg, 3/4 cu. brown sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Candy Mixture:
1-2 cups nuts (your choice), 1 lb. box raisins, 20 oz. red hot cinnamon candy

8-10 apples, peeled or not- your choice, cored and sliced thin

Cut the top off of the pumpkin. Remove seeds and and pulp.

Mix together sugar mixture.

In a separate bowl, mix together candy mixture.

Alternate layers of sugar mixture, apples and candy mixture until all are used and the pumpkin is full.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour with the top on the pumpkin (cover top with foil to keep it from burning) Add a little water if needed.

Serve from the pumpkin with pound cake or ice cream.

Well, Fall is upon us and what does that mean? Why, furnace troubles, of course!

Any of you who have ever had a commercial lease you know that these repairs fall on the tenant, not the landlord. So in order to keep N2N toasty warm this winter, here's what we're going to do:

We're holding an EXTRA storewide half price sale on Sunday, October 18th!

It'll be just like our usual First Friday Sale- everything in the shop will be half of the original price (unless already priced less). Methods of payment are cash, credit card or check. You can use your store credit but the discount won't apply.

So stick a reminder on the refrigerator and come on out:

Sunday October 18th

FIX THE FURNACE SALE
at
Next to New

1 pm to 6 pm

What's on Sale the Rest of the Week?

I hope you like the Wild Card Sale 'cause we sure do...so much so that we're doing again this week through Saturday. You remember how it works: we have cards labeled with different 30% off departments- ladies' tops, infantwear, dresses, menswear...you get the idea. One card even wins you 30% off of your entire purchase.

Refresher Course

You name it, we'd like to have it. Clean out everybody's closet and come on over. We especially need children's winter clothes. Also, shoes are a hot seller and I don't need to tell you...we can never have too many shoes. Here's a refresher on our buying program:

Do the first cut for us. Don't bring anything with problems...spots, stains, smelly, outdated...you know the drill.

We do our store credit buying Monday thru Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm. You don't need an appointment but our buying is on a first come, first served basis so you may have to wait a few minutes (Hint: we have TWO buyers here on Monday and Thursday so if you're pressed for time, those days are your best bet)As a rule, we don't buy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There's often only one employee in the shop and it's impossible to give our customers the attention they deserve if we're up front buying. Thanks for understanding.

We want to buy your clothes. If your schedule prevents you from coming in during normal buying hours, just give me a call (my cell is 770-539-1911) and we'll work out a time.

Trick or Treat!

Be sure to stop by N2N in costume on Halloween and get a treat! Bring the kiddies , too...we'll be taking pictures and we'll share lots of them in the N2N Newsletter!

Speaking of Guilty Pleasures...

This is my new favorite show...GLEE, seen on FOX on Wednesdays at 9 pm, is a comedy for the aspiring underdog in all of us. The series follows an optimistic teacher who - against all odds and a malicious cheerleading coach - attempts to save McKinley High's Glee Club from obscurity, while helping a group of aspiring underdogs realize their true star potential.

Each episode features musical numbers that will leave you breathless...you can see most of the episodes to date on FOX on Demand- pop the popcorn and then click

Do you have H1N1
flu? Take look at this online flu self-assessment test from Emory University.

If you do have symptoms of the H1N1 flu, the website says to call and tell your doctor you might be "very sick" with the flu, and ask if you "need to be seen right now." And if you don't have H1N1 symptoms, this is a cheap way to put your mind at ease so you can get some rest.
