New Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times.

His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy. His latest was published on October 10th.

Click here to read Arthur's piece on the new Windows 7 release.

My October 16th column is about the late, great Lola Glazer. Click here to read it.

FREE e.l.f. Kit!

This offer was sent out as a N2N Hot Flash a few days ago. It's such a great deal, I thought I'd share with the whole class...

A while back Linda Kirkpatrick told us about e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face) and ever since we've been hooked. It's a great source for cruelty-free makeup with wonderful prices and specials. Here's the latest:

Receive a
FREE 27-pc. mini makeup kit (ARV $15) with ANY purchase at e.l.f. right now! Just enter code LOYAL at checkout.

The offer expires 11/13/09.

The free kit includes:
9 eyeshadow shades
1 cream eyeshadow shade
1 blush
1 bronzer
10 lip gloss shades
1 brow powder
1 eye liner pencil
1 dual ended eyeshadow applicator and brush
1 face brush
1 lip brush

Makeup and more on the e.l.f. site starts at just $1, so you could pick up some nice stocking stuffers and get this great set as a gift as well.
I ordered a $2.00 tin of lip gloss and got the makeup kit free...shipping's $6.95 but even so, this is quite a bargain! And if you feel like doing some serious shopping, shipping is free with orders over $75.00! Click
here to start shopping.

NEWS FLASH: I just received an email from e.l.f. that said you can get free shipping with a $30 purchase if you use the special code ECTAPBY. I'm not sure if it'll work in conjunction with the free makeup offer but it's worth a try. Just don't shoot the messenger if it doesn't work.

New Favorite Site

As a confirmed bargain shopper, I'm a big fan of Publix's Buy One Get One Free specials. You can check their website each Thursday morning for a complete listing of the coming week's specials. You can also go to www.iheartpublix.com, where they list the specials and then link to sites where you can print manufacturer's discount coupons for many of those items. Last week my $60.00 shopping trip cost me $24.00.

Oh yes, I heart Publix, too!

Goodies for Latessa

Latessa Bortner

Latessa Bortner is a Hall County girl to the core. She graduated from North Hall High School where she performed in the marching band and earned the Girl Scout Gold Award (the equivalent of an Eagle Scout). She attended the University of Georgia, marched in UGA's band and received a degree in math education. After teaching for a year, she enrolled in Georgia Tech where she earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering. To help finance her studies, she joined the Air Force Reserves. Shortly after graduation, her unit shipped out to Saudi Arabia. She will be there until February 2010.

All of us at N2N have known Latessa and her family for over 20 years. After watching this remarkable young lady grow up, we feel a responsibility to do what we can to make her time in service as comfortable as possible. Each week we will be signing cards and collecting items to send to Latessa. One thing that is particularly needed, her mother Brenda reports, is U.S. phone cards in any denomination.

We will also be collecting hard candies (no chocolate, please), mint Life Savers, Tootsie Pops, hot cocoa mix, herbal teas, Healthy Choice soups (especially minestrone), granola bars, trail mix, peanut brittle, Jolly Ranchers, Pringles, single serving tuna packets, single serve drink powders to be used in bottled water, sourdough pretzels, plastic jars of peanut butter, iTunesdownload cards, dried fruit, pictures of the local area showing green foliage and fall colors, the lake etc., Dr. Scholl insoles, Lever 2000 soap with aloe, Gold Bond Powder and recent DVD movies & TV shows.

Latessa and her colleagues are working 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week so there is not much time for reading but puzzle and brainteaser books are a good choice. Keep in mind, Latessa's a rocket scientist, so the more challenging, the better.

Just bring your contributions to N2N and be sure to sign the card at the register while you're there. We'll be sending out packages each Wednesday. Considering this young woman's sacrifice, it's the least we can do.

Pumpkin Surprise

Mary Lou Wingard of Aiken, S.C. sent us this recipe. It's one of the most unusual we've ever featured...a dessert baked inside a whole pumpkin! I haven't tried it yet but Mary Lou says she makes it every year and it's always a hit.

1 medium pumpkin (make sure it will fit in your oven)

Sugar Mixture:
3/4 cu. sugar, 2 tbsp. flour, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg, 3/4 cu. brown sugar, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Candy Mixture:
1-2 cups nuts (your choice), 1 lb. box raisins, 20 oz. red hot cinnamon candy

8-10 apples, peeled or not- your choice, cored and sliced thin

Cut the top off of the pumpkin. Remove seeds and and pulp.

Mix together sugar mixture.

In a separate bowl, mix together candy mixture.

Alternate layers of sugar mixture, apples and candy mixture until all are used and the pumpkin is full.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour with the top on the pumpkin (cover top with foil to keep it from burning) Add a little water if needed.

Serve from the pumpkin with pound cake or ice cream.
