Amazing Palindrome
Arthur sent me this astonishing video: A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite.

This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant. Make sure you read as well as listen…forward and backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old. The contest was titled "u @ 50" by AARP. This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so brilliant. Click here to see for yourself.

Really, REALLY FUN Run!

Family TIES is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families provide a safe, nurturing and positive environment for their children and teenagers by providing them with free parenting classes specific to their child's age. The program seeks to educate prenatal parents and parents with children up to age 18. They serve families who are mandated by DFACS or the court system, as well as parents who are incarcerated or any parent wishing to improve their parenting skills.

One of the program's primary fundraisers is the annual Family Fun Run and Walk. This year's event will be Saturday, March 20. Registration begins at the American Legion at the end of Riverside Dr. at 8 AM. There will be a 1 mile run/walk (at 9 AM) and a 5K run/walk (at 9:30 AM). You can pre-register up through March 4 for $20. That also guarantees your shirt size...and it's not just any old cheesey T-shirt- it's a moisture absorbent performance running shirt. Registration is $25 after March 4.

For more info and to register online, go to http://familytiesgainesville.org/. You can stop by N2N to get a form, too.

See you at the finish line!

Showtime!

When June's father dies, she prays for a healer to come to the small town of Gray so that no one will ever suffer again. The next thing she knows, there’s a tornado, and a man in a balloon blows into town claiming to be a doctor. At first, the new doctor cures anything and everything, but soon the town's preacher takes ill with a mysterious plague. And then the plague begins to spread. Set in Indiana during the late 1800s, Anatomy of Gray deals with death, loss, love, and healing in a unique coming of age story.

The play is a collaborative performance between Johnson High School and North Hall High School. It runs Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, March 7 at 2:30 PM at the Johnson High School Performing Arts Center. Admission is $5.00.

There’s a reason casseroles have a reputation for being the standby fare for parties and potlucks: They feed the masses, are easy to transport and make great leftovers. Whether you’re a fan of tried-and-true versions, like Beefy Mac or Shepherd’s Pie, or inventive takes on the dish, like Baked Scallops and Shells or Chiles Rellenos Casserole, Woman's Day magazine has you covered. Click here for 10 different ways to whip up a crowd-pleasing casserole.

Free Pancakes!

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly three million dollars to support charities in the communities in which it operates. With your help, they hope to raise $1,000,000 for Children’s Miracle Network in 2010!

So take your appetite to IHOP on Tuesday, February 23, for a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes. Instead of paying for the flapjacks, guests will be invited to donate to Children's Miracle Network programs at affiliated hospitals around the country. The free pancakes will be offered from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Why Pancake Tuesday? Known also as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

Shop Well; Do Good

Evelyn Asher of Asheville sent in this great suggestion:

Donate to your favorite cause and get bargains in return. At www.goodshop.com, which connects to the sites of some 1,400 retailers including Target, Apple, and Sears, up to 30% of what you spend is donated to your favorite charity. Choose the beneficiary from more than 84,000 listed, or add your own. Retailers offer coupons and discounts on GoodShop, some of which aren’t offered elsewhere.

A related website,
www.goodsearch.com, is a search engine that donates a penny to your favorite cause for every online search you make.

Thanks, Evelyn!

MISS FIRECRACKER CONTEST

A hot tamale tries to throw off a different sort of heat in this comedy of small-town manners. Carnelle Scott is best-known in her hometown of Yazoo City, MS, for her unrepentant promiscuity. An orphan taken in by her genteel relatives, she idolizes her older cousin Elain Rutledge, a former Fourth of July "Miss Firecracker" contest winner who is taking time out from her pampered life to give a speech on "My Life as a Beauty" at this year's pageant. Determined to follow in Elain's footsteps, Carnelle implores Elain to let her borrow the red dress in which Elain won the contest in 1972. Meanwhile, Elain's ne'er-do-well brother arrives with a get-rich-quick scheme that involves hocking the family estate. Into this mix steps Mac Sam, one of the men who contributed to Carnelle's scandalous past.

Gainesville High's production will run Feb. 23-25 (Tuesday-Thursday) at 7:30 PM at the GHS Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5.00.

Improv This!

It's time once again to delve into the wonderland of Improv with North Hall's very own troupe. Admission is $7.00

Secret Dry Skin Lotion

Usually our recipes are for edibles but not this week. Cynthia Vey brought in
this recipe for dry skin lotion. It has easy to locate ingredients (not always the case when you're making lotions and potions) and it really does the trick on dry skin. Pack it up in some pretty containers and it'll make a great gift!

16 oz. Johnson's Baby Lotion (pink plastic bottle)
8 oz. Vaseline (be sure to use Vaseline, not an off-brand)
16 oz. Vitamin E cream (only found at Dollar General) It's in a white 8 oz. container with pink lettering. You'll need 2 bottles. Make sure it's the cream.

Microwave the Vaseline for a few seconds until just soft. It will plop out of the jar. Put it into a big bowl and combine all the ingredients with an electric mixer until it's fluffy. Package however you'd like.

Best Ever Chocolate Pudding

There are certain foods that many of us almost NEVER make from scratch...breakfast cereal, crackers, the list goes on. One of those products is pudding. I recently checked my pantry and there were six boxes of Jell-O pudding mix on the shelves. Then I came across this recipe. I've made the powdered stuff for so long, I'd forgotten what the real deal tastes like. There's no comparison! Whip up this delight and see if you don't agree:

1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups milk
2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons vanilla

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, cornstarch and salt. Stir in milk and chocolate. Cook, stirring constantly, until chocolate melts and mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in egg yolks. Return to heat and cook 2 minutes more. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Chill before serving.

What WILL they think of next?
  • The mission of RunPee.com is to help you enjoy your movie going experience and relieve your bladder at the same time...

    • Every movie has a few scenes in there somewhere that aren’t crucial to the plot, or can be easily summed up for you on the RunPee site.
    • Every movie has a few minutes you can miss and not be lost when you sit back down.
    • No more guessing when to run to the bathroom.
Just log on and click the name of the movie you're planning on seeing. The site will tell you how many minutes into the feature the break is and how long you have to make it to the bathroom and back.
