Current Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on February 20th. Click
here to read Arthur's piece on cloud storage.

My February 19th column is called "Observe and Report? Not if you have a conscience" Click here to go to it.

Next to New is now on Facebook! Click here to go to our fan page and join up. We'll be posting great deals when we find them during the week, giving out N2N coupons to our Facebook friends and linking to other great frugal sites. We'll have the Deal of the Day and any other Hot Flashes that come out way.

Last week, our Facebook friends got the 411 on a free 8 x 10 print from Walgreens, a chance to get a free Regenerist starter set, WalMart web coupons, Dr. Seuss storytimes at Target, and a whole weekend of half price N2N shopping with the secret Facebook code word!

Come on and join up...you'll be glad you did!

Amazing Palindrome
Arthur sent me this astonishing video: A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite.

This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant. Make sure you read as well as listen…forward and backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old. The contest was titled "u @ 50" by AARP. This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so brilliant. Click here to see for yourself.

Really, REALLY FUN Run!

Family TIES is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families provide a safe, nurturing and positive environment for their children and teenagers by providing them with free parenting classes specific to their child's age. The program seeks to educate prenatal parents and parents with children up to age 18. They serve families who are mandated by DFACS or the court system, as well as parents who are incarcerated or any parent wishing to improve their parenting skills.

One of the program's primary fundraisers is the annual Family Fun Run and Walk. This year's event will be Saturday, March 20. Registration begins at the American Legion at the end of Riverside Dr. at 8 AM. There will be a 1 mile run/walk (at 9 AM) and a 5K run/walk (at 9:30 AM). You can pre-register up through March 4 for $20. That also guarantees your shirt size...and it's not just any old cheesey T-shirt- it's a moisture absorbent performance running shirt. Registration is $25 after March 4.

For more info and to register online, go to http://familytiesgainesville.org/. You can stop by N2N to get a form, too.

See you at the finish line!

And to help you get ready for the Family T.I.E.S. Run...

If you're a runner, you probably have an iPod...and what you listen to can certainly help or hinder your workout. Click here to download actual Marine cadence calls. Hup one, Hup two...

Showtime!

When June's father dies, she prays for a healer to come to the small town of Gray so that no one will ever suffer again. The next thing she knows, there’s a tornado, and a man in a balloon blows into town claiming to be a doctor. At first, the new doctor cures anything and everything, but soon the town's preacher takes ill with a mysterious plague. And then the plague begins to spread. Set in Indiana during the late 1800s, Anatomy of Gray deals with death, loss, love, and healing in a unique coming of age story.

The play is a collaborative performance between Johnson High School and North Hall High School. It runs Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, March 7 at 2:30 PM at the Johnson High School Performing Arts Center. Admission is $5.00.

Casserole Collection

There’s a reason casseroles have a reputation for being the standby fare for parties and potlucks: They feed the masses, are easy to transport and make great leftovers. Whether you’re a fan of tried-and-true versions, like Beefy Mac or Shepherd’s Pie, or inventive takes on the dish, like Baked Scallops and Shells or Chiles Rellenos Casserole, Woman's Day magazine has you covered. Click here for 10 different ways to whip up a crowd-pleasing casserole.
