My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

5 Dangerous Things You Should Let Your Kids Do

I love the TED talks. They're lectures given by people with a passion for what they do. They cover everything from science to technology to entertainment to design to...well, everything. One of my favorites is a lecture by Gever Tulley, the founder of the Tinkering School, an exploratory curriculum designed to help kids – ages 8 to 17 – learn how to build things. His lecture spells out 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do. I agree with all but one. What do you think? Click here.

Cake Balls

This weekend Molly and Rachel were both home. While we watched the snow fall, we teamed up to make cake balls. These have been a big hit this holiday season and they're easy to make but labor-intensive. You have to bake a sheet cake, let it cool, crumble it up, mix in icing, let it chill, make it into balls, freeze those and then dip them in chocolate or almond bark.
That's why it should be a family project, not a solitary pursuit. The ultimate result is well worth the trouble. Click here to get started.
BTW- The Times also ran a great article on making cake pops. It's the same basic principle. Click here to see it.

Computer Problems?

Arthur says that if you have an old computer- whether a desktop or laptop- and you have data on it that you'd like to have removed or copied, he can do that for you.

If you've recently changed computers or plan to soon, he can extract those photos and documents you may have thought were lost for good. Well, they are not lost and your computer may even be salvageable. Let him take a look at it. He can also replace a small or defective hard drive or add a second one if you've run out of storage space.

He reminds you that just as with your car, your computer requires periodic tune-ups, usually twice a year. He can clean the junk from your system, check it for viruses and malware and make it run faster. Even if you think yours is running fine, he can make it run faster. His rates are reasonable and he stands behind his work.

Technology bargains!

Recently, a friend came across a Dell laptop (one of the really cool ones with the lime green lid) at a thrift store for $30.00. When she plugged it in, all she got was the feared "blue screen of death" so I guess we know why someone donated it. Being the optimistic type, she bought it anyway and brought it to Arthur. In just a few hours he had it running like new.

Just keep this in mind when you run across technology at thrift stores and yard sales. Of course, not every computer can be revived, but a surprising majority of them can. When you come across an uber-bargain like this, give Arthur a call at Computer House Calls (770-540-5100) and see what he thinks. All I can say is I wish I'd been the one to spot that green Dell!

Brown Sugar and Spice Glazed Cream Cheese

I sampled this last week at Publix and was absolutely blown away! They served it sans nuts on graham cracker squares. I plan to serve mine on the new brown sugar cinnamon RItz crackers (they're buy-one-get-one-free this week at Publix!) It would also be good on savory crackers.

You can also enjoy this recipe by making cracker sandwiches. Add Boar’s Head Black Forest Ham or any other Boar’s Head ham of choice, to a multi-seeded cracker spread with the cream cheese and glaze. Top with another cracker, omitting the nuts. The glaze is also nice warmed through for a few seconds in the microwave and cooled a little before dripping over the cheese.

  • 1 (8-ounce) bar cream cheese
  • 1 (11-ounce) jar Boar’s Head Sugar & Spice Ham Glaze
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  1. Place the cream cheese on a small serving platter with crackers and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, pour the glaze overtop the cream cheese until it’s covered and the glaze drips over the edges.
  3. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the glaze, Serve with crackers of choice.

There is something magical about a homemade molasses cookie with a cup of coffee or a glass of cold milk. These cookies are all about red checked fabrics, aprons and wonderful smells.

You can sandwich these together with cream cheese frosting in the middle or use ice cream or pumpkin butter or buttercream frosting. The permutations are endless.

Molasses Crinkles

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon ground ginger ( I use a full teaspoon)
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper or 1/4 tsp chipotle powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup vegetable shortening at room temperature
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup grandmas molasses (NOT black strap or Barbados!)
granulated sugar for sugaring tops of cookies

Whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves, and salt in a bowl until combined.

Beat together shortening, butter, and brown sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer at medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes in a stand mixer (preferably fitted with paddle attachment) or 6 minutes with a handheld. Add egg and molasses, beating until combined. Reduce speed to low, then mix in flour mixture until combined.

Put oven racks in upper and lower thirds of oven and preheat oven to 375°F.

Roll 1 heaping teaspoon of dough into a 1-inch ball with wet hands, then dip 1 end of ball in sanding sugar. Make more cookies in same manner, arranging them, sugared side up, 2 inches apart on 2 ungreased baking sheets.

Bake cookies, switching position of sheets halfway through baking, until undersides are golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes total, then cool on sheets 1 minute. Transfer to racks to cool completely.

It's heartwarming to see how many people step up to help others during this season of giving. We get lots of folks in shopping for needy families. May I make a suggestion? Why not give a N2N gift certificate as part of your Angel Tree gift?

I've discovered that often those who would most benefit from resale shopping don't know about us. They spend their meager clothing budget at cut-rate discount stores where the clothing is poorly made and wears out in no time. The same money goes MUCH further here at N2N and the items are well-made name brands and mall brands that are far more durable and (IMHO) cuter, too.

We'll be glad to convert some of your store credit to a gift certificate or sell you a credit to use as part of your Christmas giving. You'll know the recipient will be able to find great fashions and learn about the many benefits of resale shopping at the same time.

Now, that's the gift that keeps on giving!
