Columns!

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Arthur's latest was published on December 11th. Click
here to read his wrap up on computing in the first decade of the new millennium.

I'm taking a few weeks off from column writing so I can attend to some other projects. I'll be back on January 7th. Meanwhile, click here to read one of my favorites about The Jackson Building and the beginnings of N2N.

20 Biggest Movie Mistakes of 2010

5 Dangerous Things You Should Let Your Kids Do

I love the TED talks. They're lectures given by people with a passion for what they do. They cover everything from science to technology to entertainment to design to...well, everything. One of my favorites is a lecture by Gever Tulley, the founder of the Tinkering School, an exploratory curriculum designed to help kids – ages 8 to 17 – learn how to build things. His lecture spells out 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do. I agree with all but one. What do you think? Click here.

Doodles

Google doodles are just fascinating- you know, the changes they make to the logo to celebrate holidays- everything from Christmas to Dizzy Gillespie's birthday (above.) Click here to learn about them and see them all.

Senior Special

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia on Ridge Rd. has announced it will be offering spay-neuter surgery for half-price to northeast Georgia residents age 62 and older during January 2011.

The fees for surgery, which normally range from $50-60, will be $25-30 depending on the animal. Appointments for the “senior special” are limited and available now on a first-come basis by calling HSNEGA at 770-532-6617.

Cake Balls

This weekend Molly and Rachel were both home. While we watched the snow fall, we teamed up to make cake balls. These have been a big hit this holiday season and they're easy to make but labor-intensive. You have to bake a sheet cake, let it cool, crumble it up, mix in icing, let it chill, make it into balls, freeze those and then dip them in chocolate or almond bark.
That's why it should be a family project, not a solitary pursuit. The ultimate result is well worth the trouble. Click here to get started.
BTW- The Times also ran a great article on making cake pops. It's the same basic principle. Click here to see it.

Wise Words

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.

Computer Problems?

Arthur says that if you have an old computer- whether a desktop or laptop- and you have data on it that you'd like to have removed or copied, he can do that for you.

If you've recently changed computers or plan to soon, he can extract those photos and documents you may have thought were lost for good. Well, they are not lost and your computer may even be salvageable. Let him take a look at it. He can also replace a small or defective hard drive or add a second one if you've run out of storage space.

He reminds you that just as with your car, your computer requires periodic tune-ups, usually twice a year. He can clean the junk from your system, check it for viruses and malware and make it run faster. Even if you think yours is running fine, he can make it run faster. His rates are reasonable and he stands behind his work.

Call Computer House Calls at 770-540-5100 or email him at

arthur@glazerthepctech.com. Your computer will thank you.

That's it for now. Remember-email goes both ways...

If you run across any exceptional bargains or impressive new products, let us know. We'll put the word out!
