Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Arthur's latest was published on October 29th. Click here to read "Scrub unused programs off your computer"

I took some time off from writing columns this month so here's one of my favorite Halloween pieces from a few years ago. My column will resume on November 11th.

NOT just for dummies...

You know all those For Dummies books? The ones that teach you about almost any topic? Really, they cover everything from finance to writing to health care to religion to pet care...the list goes on and on. You can access all this online, just click here.

You're no dummy if you know where to go to get the right information!

Makes me think

Sometimes the most random everyday encounters force us to stop and rethink the truths and perceptions we have ingrained in our minds. These encounters are educationally priceless. They spawn moments of deep thought and self-reflection that challenge the status quo and help us evolve as sensible individuals.

Makes Me Think (MMT) is an online community where people share daily life stories that provoke deep thought and inspire positive change. Click here to go there.

Food on the table

This website should appeal to all of you multi-tasking, dual-income readers who can hardly find enough time in a day to apply body lotion, let alone cook a healthy meal for your family.

It's called Food on the Table, - an online service that helps families eat better and save money at the grocery store. All you have to do to get started is sign up and become a member and then enter the grocery stores that you primarily purchase your food.

Once you've input your neighborhood supermarket information, the website automatically shows a list of the "main ingredient" items that are on sale at your local grocery store. From there, you select the items you'd like to use to craft a meal around, and the site spits back recipes based around these items. Bon appetit!

Apple Oat Bars with Dulce de Leche

Warm from the oven, these apple oat bars are a wonderful fall dessert. It is kind of like an apple cobbler you can eat right out of your hand. If you’re an a-la-mode sort, then I highly advise adding a big scoop of ice cream drizzled with a little extra dulce de leche. But in a bowl, of course. No sense getting messy.

Read-a-thon!

It's 24 Hour Read-A-Thon time again! A yearly fundraiser for the Gainesville/ Hall County Alliance for Literacy, it's hosted by Hall Book Exchange on Thompson Bridge Road.

It starts at 5 pm Friday, Oct. 21st and ends at 5 pm Saturday, Oct. 22nd.
Readers come, sign in with a donation, register for door prize drawings then read for however long they wish to themselves. You may bring a book, borrow or buy a book from the store.

Free coffee and refreshments donated from the community are available. Grand prizes are awarded for the person who reads the longest and person who raises the most money for the Allia
nce for Literacy. Door prizes donated from throughout the local business community are plentiful...including some N2N gift certificates!

During this event authors will drop in to discuss and autograph their books with all proceeds from these sales donated to the Alliance for Literacy. You may choose to attend the author event instead of read and still count as an active participant.

Friday - 7:00 pm, Children's Bedtime Story (each participant twelve and younger receive a goody bag and are entered into separate door prize drawing). Our Rachel will perform "Martina, The Beautiful Cockroach: A Cuban Folktale" from the book by Carmen Agra Deedy. This piece won her numerous first place awards and a slot as an alternate in national competition- it has to be seen to be believed!
There will be readings by local authors all day Saturday, too. Call 770-532-6693 for more details and to reserve your reading time slot in advance. You can visit Hall Book Exchange's Facebook page- http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=270641112976421- for updates.

Trick or Treat on the Trail

Kids will love Trick or Treat on the Trail from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 29. There will be trick or treating, petting zoo, bounce house food and more. It's at Rock Creek Park across from the main branch of the library in Gainesville. It's free to attend, canned food donations encouraged.

Showtime!

The North Hall High School Hollow Horse Players will present "A SHAYNA MAIDEL", this year's one-act play competition piece, on October 20, 22 (at 7:30 pm) and 23 (at 2 pm). Tickets are $5.00.

Rose Weiss emigrated to America as a child with her father, Mordechai. Stricken with scarlet fever, older sister Lusia stayed behind in Poland with Mama, planning to follow later. Now, it's 1946 and Rose is a young woman living in Manhattan when she learns that Lusia has been liberated from a concentration camp and is coming to New York. After a fifteen-year separation, the two women are almost like strangers and must struggle to reconnect.

"A Shayna Maidel" (meaning "a pretty girl" in Yiddish) is a powerful, poignant, and emotionally charged tale of sustenance and hope, and the belief that from a broken and bitter past, a better future may be born.

Something to Crow About

This is the most intriguing episode of PBS's "Nature" I've ever seen. Who knew that crows are some of the smartest animals, even more so than many primates? They can remember individual faces and teach their young to watch out for people they perceive as dangerous. They gather together to mourn as a community when one of their own dies. They use tools. Amazing. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/a-murder-of-crows/full-episode/5977/
Whatcha Eatin'?

A rotisserie chicken is a busy cook's best friend. Whether you get yours from the farmers market or from your local grocery store, nothing beats being able to have dinner on the table in about five minutes. When simple roast chicken gets boring, you can save time by using the precooked chicken in various recipes.
