Latest Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Arthur's latest was published on October 30th. Click
here to learn about avoiding eye and back strain while using your computer.

My October 29th column is about Black Dog Syndrome. Click here to read it.

Blackout!

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia on Ridge Rd. is offering special adoption fees for black adult dogs and puppies adopted through
Sunday, November 14.

Typically $100 per animal, the adoption fee for adult black dogs (6 months and older) will be $50, and the adoption fee for black puppies (6 months and younger) will be $75.

Why? Scroll back up and read the column on Black Dog Syndrome...

Gold and Silver Buying Fundraiser

Need some cash for holiday gifts? Then grab your unwanted gold and silver, and head for the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia on Saturday, November 13, from 10:30 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Southeast Gold Buyers, Atlanta's largest and most trusted gold buyers, will be buying unwanted yellow, white and rose gold and silver jewelry (including 10k, 14K, 18K, broken chains, class rings, out-dated jewelry and even pronged settings...stones can be removed and returned). At the end of the day, Southeast Gold Buyers will donate 20 percent of the total amount they purchase to HSNEGA.

It's a win-win event...you make cash on the spot for unwanted jewelry and the Humane Society shares the profits. The more you sell, the more money HSNEGA receives, and you don’t have to give one dollar!

Need to purchase some gifts? Rainbow’s End, a fun, fashionable and affordable accessories business, also will be selling jewelry, purses and other trendy accessories, and will be donating a portion of all sales to HSNEGA, as well.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the animals in the care of the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia. Questions? Call the Humane Society at 770-532-6617, visit www.hsnega.org, or see their Facebook page under “Events.”

Precious Cargo

Every Tuesday from 9:00 - 11:00 and Friday from 3:00 - 5:00, the Gainesville Police Department, 118 Jesse Jewell Parkway, sponsors a FREE child safety seat fitting station. No appointments are necessary. Certified child passenger safety technicians will check the installation of your child safety seat and provide assistance if needed.

Giving gift cards for the holidays?

Gift cards are the most popular and most requested item this holiday season; with 57% of adults saying they prefer to receive gift cards this year, according to the National Retail Federation. And for those who give and receive, there are many reasons to rejoice.

New laws have extended redemption periods and required issuers to make rules and fees more clear. Still, with so many options out there, click here to see things savvy shoppers should be aware of.

FUNdraiser!

Family TIES ("Teaching, informing, empowering and supporting today's families") is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families provide a safe, nurturing and positive environment for their children and teenagers. Their programs seek to educate prenatal parents and parents with children up to age 18. They serve families who are wishing to improve their parenting skills as well as families who are incarcerated or mandated by DFCS or the court system.

You can support Family TIES by getting in on the 50/50 raffle! As part of the yearly Diamonds and Denim fundraiser, we're selling raffle tickets for $5.00 each. At the fundraiser on Nov. 13th (see last week's Next to Newsletter for more about that), one ticket will be drawn- the winner gets HALF of the proceeds for the raffle ticket sales, with the other half going to Family TIES. You don't have to be present to win. You can get your raffle tickets at N2N. Just think- the odds of winning are SO much better than the lottery!

What's for Dinner?

I recently tried making one of those Bisquick Impossible Pies. They're the kind that combine Bisquick baking mix with eggs and milk which results in the pie making it's own crust as it bakes. I prepared the egg custard and it was wonderful.

You can make Impossible dessert pies, both cream and fruit, main dish casseroles like Impossible Cheeseburger Pie and quiches...the possibilities are endless. Click here to see an excellent selection of recipes.

Wise Words

Arthur went to Ellijay last Saturday with the Red Cross to participate in a Veteran's Day parade. That's when he took this picture of snow on pumpkins. That got me to thinking about the phrase "when the frost is on the punkins" which led me to look up the whole poem by James Whitcomb Riley.

I can see why he was the most popular poet of his day, a superstar, really. Click here to read what has to be the perfect Autumn poem.

Computer Problems?

Arthur says that if you have an old computer- whether a desktop or laptop- and you have data on it that you'd like to have removed or copied, he can do that for you.

If you've recently changed computers or plan to soon, he can extract those photos and documents you may have thought were lost for good. Well, they are not lost and your computer may even be salvageable. Let him take a look at it. He can also replace a small or defective hard drive or add a second one if you've run out of storage space.

He reminds you that just as with your car, your computer requires periodic tune-ups, usually twice a year. He can clean the junk from your system, check it for viruses and malware and make it run faster. Even if you think yours is running fine, he can make it run faster. His rates are reasonable and he stands behind his work.

Call Computer House Calls at 770-540-5100 or email him at arthur@glazerthepctech.com. Your computer will thank you.

That's it for now. Remember-email goes both ways...

If you run across any exceptional bargains or impressive new products, let us know. We'll put the word out!
