Great Advice

Regina Brett, a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, is one of my favorites. Last week she wrote a column that gave me one of those "Gee, I wish I'd written that!" moments.

She says, quite rightly, that kids need a commencement address when they start high school, not just when they leave it. Click

Driver's Test

Now that Rachel's 15, she's getting ready to take her written driver's test. I wonder if any of the questions on the test are like this one?

Q.: You drive a car at a constant speed. On your left is a steep slope. On the right is a fire truck, driving with exactly the same speed next to you. In front of your car someone is riding on a huge pig, bigger than your car. Right behind you, you're followed by a combat helicopter three feet away from your bumper. The pig and the helicopter are also going the same speed as you. What would you do to get out of this dangerous situation?

A.: Just wait until the merry-go-round stops and then get out.

Mazel Tov!

Congratulations to all of our friends at East Hall Middle School. Their creativity, determination and hard work has paid off- the school is no longer on the No Child Left Behind "Needs Improvement" list! Click
here to read all about it.

We're not one bit surprised. We've seen first-hand what the wonderful staff like Lisa, Sassy, Kay, Stephanie and Anne can do. They also have dedicated volunteers like Marsha to help make the magic happen. Kudos to all the faculty, staff, volunteers, students and parents!

This week (except on Friday) any EHMS staff member, student or parent of a student can take 25% off of any cash purchase. Just let us know you're part of that amazing school when you check out.

Grits Casserole

My family loves breakfast for dinner. The other night I tried this recipe and was absolutely blown away. It has a wonderful souffle-like texture and the blend of flavors is heavenly. Also, Ingles currently has 2 lbs. of grated cheese for $4.98!

6 c. water

1 1/2 c. grits

2 c. grated cheddar cheese

4 eggs, beaten

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. pepper

1 medium onion, chopped

2 c. chopped cooked ham, turkey ham or kielbasa (or just add more veggies)

Bring water to boil, add grits. Lower heat, stir in cheese, eggs, etc. Pour into a 3 quart greased casserole. Bake 1-1 1/2 hours (yes, really) at 350 degrees. This can be made ahead, refrigerated or frozen.

We're busy, busy, busy putting out great fall fashions...now's the time to pick up awesome coats, jackets, long sleeve tops and sweaters for very little moola.

Especially notable are the ladies' size XL racks and big girl's sizes 12-20. We also have an impressive maternity section and oh, gosh, if you're expecting a fall or winter baby...well, just wait till you see the infant's section!

What's on sale this week?

Let's do the Wild Card Sale. Pick a card to find out where your 30% off discount is. It could be pants and shorts, shoes and bags, infant wear, dresses and sets, even storewide...who knows?

And we believe in do-overs. If you don't like your first card, feel free to draw again!

There's CA$H in your closet!

Each week, we'll be doing cash buying for one area in the shop that really needs inventory. This week, it's SHOES .

Here's how it works... bring your shoes that are in great condition. We'll buy them for cash. You can bring in other clothing and accessories as well- we'll buy them for credit as usual. Please pack your shoes separately and let us know that you have cash items when you come in. Buying hours are the same: Monday thru Thursday 10AM to 4PM and other times by prior arrangement.

FREE Store Credit!

Next to New opened it's door in 1986. After 23 years (20 of those in our current location) we're still greeting new customers every day. The present economy is encouraging even more people to find alternatives to full-price shopping. We'd like to help the process along a little and here's what you can do to be part of it:

We're offering a $5.00 store credit to you any time you bring us a new shopper. It's easy. Just bring in your friends who've never tried N2N shopping. When they check out at the register, we'll give YOU a $5.00 credit on the spot. It gets even easier- you don't have to come with them. Just have your friends tell us you sent them and we'll hold a credit for you at the register until you stop by to pick it up. Each week we'll publish a list in the Next to Newsletter of everyone who has a credit waiting for them. Note: these promotional credits are only good for 2 weeks so hurry in to pick them up.
THEN- at the end of the month (starting September 30th) we'll hold a drawing of names of everyone who brought us new shoppers. That winner gets a $50.00 store credit. Also, if you brought us the MOST new shoppers, you'll get a $50.00 store credit.

Yard Sale!

After 15 years in the same house and 6 years in the same warehouse, it's time to clean out. You're invited to the Glazer family's yard sale, Saturday, August 29th from 8 am to 2 pm.

It'll be at our warehouse, located in the basement of Hall Book Exchange, 1854 Thompson Bridge Rd (just pull around back). HBE owner Myra and some of her family will be selling things, too, so stop by for great bargains on a myriad of items- televisions, furniture, surplus fixtures, knick knacks, paddy whacks, you name it!

In case you were wondering, Arthur and Rachel will be operating the yard sale...I'll be hard at work at N2N, as usual.

Book Nook

Need textbooks? If you're a new college freshman or the parent of one, get ready for sticker shock. A semester's worth of textbooks can run as much as $900... if you pay retail. Instead, try some of these alternatives:

First, start out shopping locally. Check with Hall Book Exchange. They just might have the books you need and you can trade in the books you no longer need for credit.

Try www.paperbackswap.com. I found a lot of Molly's textbooks there. You can trade out books for credits or buy credits. Either way, it's a great deal.

Go to www.half.com. It's a site owned by eBay. They have a special textbook section where you can save up to 90% of the original cost.

Check out www.textbooks.com. They have the most used textbooks anywhere, the largest selection of digital textbooks and free shipping on orders over $25.00. Whether you are buying textbooks or selling textbooks, they back every order with their Total Satisfaction Guarantee.

Let me know if you come across any other alternatives to full price textbooks and I'll pass on the news.

Frugal Fun

Here's a great one-stop-shopping site for all things frugal/coupon/discount. Go to www.frugallivingandhavingfun.com. It's user friendly and comprehensive...what more could you ask for?

I ran into Kristy Arrmstrong at CVS last week when she was buying $90.00 worth of merchandise for about $25.00. She pointed me toward this great site:
http://www.refundcents.com/. There's a small fee (I paid $4.00 to try it out for 3 months) but it's well worth the cost...lots of great bargains and an easy-to-use interface. Thanks, Kristy!

Sign Wanted

Our electric "OPEN" sign here at N2N is suffering a long, lingering death. It now reads O--N. I guess I could just go out an buy another one but that goes against everything I preach week after week. So...I figure someone out there has an open sign they're not using. Want to trade for store credit? If you do, just give me a call at 770-539-1911.

There's Still Time to Win a House in the Country

How would you like to own a 4200 sq. ft. log home on five secluded acres outside of Toccoa? How about if it only cost $105.00? Impossible?

Not really...My cousin, Angela Dyer, and her family are the home's owners. Right now isn't the optimum time to have $1M house on the market. After trying to sell for a couple years, they're now trying a different approach.

They're RAFFLING the house off. The tickets are $100.00 each plus a $5.00 service fee. 7500 tickets will be sold. The odds of winning a Megamillions jackpot are 1 in 175,711,536.

The odds of winning Angela's house is 1 in 7500. I like those odds. The raffle is being handled by Seed Sowers, a charity that works with people with special needs. To see all the details, pictures and specs on the house and the raffle, click here.

In the words of the New York Lottery: Hey, you can't win if you don't play.
