New Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on January 23rd. Click
here to read Arthur's piece on cleaning out and speeding up your computer.

I took a week off from column writing because my asthma was acting up. I'll be back on February 5th with a piece about-- what else?-- asthma. In lieu of a new column, click here to go to one of my old favorites. It's about Bigfoot, of all things.

WEAR RED!

National Wear Red Day is Friday, February 5. It’s your chance to show off a favorite red dress or shirt to support for women’s heart disease awareness. Guys can also participate by wearing a red tie or shirt.

Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women. Awareness is increasing thanks to events like National Wear Red Day. However, studies have shown that many women still underestimate their risk of getting heart disease. Even when women are concerned, many still struggle to control risk factors for heart disease.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), risk factors for heart disease include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Being overweight
  • Being physically inactive
  • Having a family history of early heart disease
  • Age (55 or older for women)

It’s important that women begin working to protect themselves against heart disease as early as their teen years. A surprising 80% of women 40 to 60 years old have one or more risk factors for heart disease. According to research compiled by the NHLBI, just one risk factor doubles your chance of developing heart disease.

After menopause, women are even more prone to heart disease due to a decline in estrogen. Early menopause, whether natural or from surgery, means you’re twice as likely to develop heart disease as women the same age who haven’t gone through menopause.

Four of the most important things you can do to prevent heart disease will reduce your risk by 82%: eat right, be physically active, don’t smoke, and keep a healthy weight.

Visit NHLBI for more tools and resources to help prevent heart disease. And remember to wear red on February 5!

Sweet Doggie Dreams

Although I'm not very crafty, I certainly appreciate those who are. Some crafting genius came up with this idea- a cozy dog bed created from a men's XL cable knit sweater! Click here to see instructions.

Chicken Nachos

Nachos are a perennial favorite at the Glazer house. Click here for a great recipe for crockpot chicken nachos from Stephanie O'Dea. She started out in January 2008, blogging about her goal of using a crockpot every day for a year in her Year of Slow Cooking blog.

In typical Cinderella fashion, that led to guest appearances on Good Morning America and a cookbook deal (shades of "Julie and Julia") Even though she's no longer crockpot cooking and blogging on a daily basis, her blog is still up and it's a great addition to your favorites section. Also, if you have gluten issues, it's a great resource- all of her recipes are gluten free (with modifications for those of us who aren't)

Brrrrr! If the return of bitter weather caught you a bit by surprise, stop by N2N to stock up on warm, cozy gear. We've gotten in so much this week...lots of plus sizes, misses, juniors, kidswear, ADORABLE infantwear, shoes. We're also busy putting out spring fashions, too. There's something for everyone!

Let's do the Wild Card Sale this week...you remember how it works: we have cards labeled with different 30% off departments-ladies' tops, infantwear, dresses, menswear...you get the idea. One card even wins you 30% off of your entire purchase.

Thinking about cleaning out some closets? Remember our mantra:
Recycle Reuse Resale!

Here's a refresher on our buying program:
Do the first cut for us. Don't bring anything with problems...spots, stains, smelly, outdated...you know the drill.

We do our store credit buying Monday thru Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm. You don't need an appointment but our buying is on a first come, first served basis so you may have to wait a few minutes (Hint: we have TWO buyers here on Monday and Wednesday so if you're pressed for time, those days are your best bet.)
As a rule, we don't buy on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There's often only one employee in the shop and it's impossible to give our customers the attention they deserve if we're up front buying. Thanks for understanding.

We want to buy your clothes. If your schedule prevents you from coming in during normal buying hours, just give us a call and we'll work out a time.

Computer Care

My husband, Arthur, writes the Computer Care column for the Times. He also runs Computer House Calls, repairing and optimizing computers, offering instruction and all that other techie stuff. He's one of the best.

Recently, we've barely seen him- he's been covered up with calls, mostly involving viruses, spyware and malware. This week, he took a break from writing his twice a month column so I thought this might be a good time to re-run one of his past columns...the one dealing with viruses and malware. Click here to
read it. And here's another good one about viruses...

Crescent Layer Bars

Canned crescent dinner rolls are SO versatile! I use them as crusts for pot pies, in last week's muffin tin quiches and now here's a great dessert recipe with crescent rolls as it's base. Also they're currently on sale at Ingles for $1.00 (plus they're offering triple coupons this week!) and you can click here to print a coupon for additional savings.

INGREDIENTS

1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls

1 cup white vanilla baking chips

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1 cup slivered almonds

1 cup cashew halves and pieces

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)

DIRECTIONS

Heat oven to 375°F (350°F for dark pans). Grease bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan.

If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough into 2 long rectangles. If using dough sheet: Unroll dough. Place in pan; press over bottom and 1/2 inch up sides to form crust.
Bake 5 minutes.

Remove partially baked crust from oven. Sprinkle vanilla chips, chocolate chips, almonds and cashews evenly over crust. Pour condensed milk evenly over top.

Return to oven; bake 20 to 25 minutes longer or until golden brown. Cool 10 minutes. Run knife around sides of pan. Cool 1 hour. Refrigerate about 30 minutes or until chocolate is set. For bars, cut into 9 rows by 4 rows.
