A weekly publication of Next
to New Resale Boutique

Good morning, everybody!

It's officially 2010 and all of our resolutions are now officially in effect. Whatever yours are, I hope one of them is to clean out closets, get a pocket full of store credits and stop by N2N often.

We're hard at work making sure that you'll have a great selection of like-new family fashions each time you come in...and- can you believe it?- in addition to continuing to stock great winter wear, we're also putting out beautiful spring inventory. Now's the time to get a jump on warm weather wear- think spring!

This week's Next to Newsletter will be short and sweet. The b
itterly cold weather has triggered my asthma and I'm taking it easy for a few days. I promise I'll make it up to you next week.

Let's do the Wild Card Sale this week...you remember how it works: we have cards labeled with different 30% off departments-ladies' tops, infantwear, dresses, menswear...you get the idea. One card even wins you 30% off of your entire purchase.

New Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice
-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on January 2nd. Clic
k here to read Arthur's piece retrospective on the last decade in computing.

My December 25th column is about the challenges of raising a puppy. Click here to read it.

Free Flicks!

A few years ago we subscribed to Netflix and, quite honestly, I wasn't impressed. We seemed to spend a lot of time waiting for returned movies to be received and requested movies to be delivered.

I guess we weren't the only ones to be underwhelmed- Netflix has changed significantly in the last few years. Now you ca n view a wide variety of movies and television shows immediately on your PC rather than waiting for discs to be delivered.

Best of all, you can take Netflix for a two week test drive. That's what I'm doing. If it looks like we're going to continue using it, we'll pay $8.98+tax (total 9.89)/ month to get one disc delivered at a time plus unlimited online viewing. If we don't use it much, we'll just cancel the service. Note: if you use your debit card, your account will show a pending authorization for $9.89 but it won't actually be debited until after the 2 week trial period.

The first movie
I viewed online, Jeff Daniels' The Answer Man, was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. We're off to a good start.

Click here to try Netflix for two weeks free.

Goofy Name/ Great Product

Some of my favorite low-cal treats are Skinny Cow frozen delicacies. There are ice cream sandwiches, chocolate drizzled truffle bars, c
ones...each low in calories and high in fiber...and none of that artificial sweetener taste. There's just creamy sweetness.

Now, through Wednesday, you can get Skinny Cow treats for buy one get one free at Publix- that makes them $2.50 each rather than the usual $5.00. My store had already sold out of my favorites but no problem- all I had to do was ask customer service for a rain check and I'll get the treats at this great price when they're restocked.

Also, click here to get a $1.00 off coupon for the truffle bars.

Friends and Family News

Our dear friend Pennie Phillips is currently hospitalized with pneumonia. Pennie, we're thinking of you and hope you're home and back to your break-neck schedule (well, maybe you ought to slow down just a little ) soon! Love ya', girl!

Tamale Pie

Our daughter, Molly, was home for an all too brief visit during the holidays. She's become a pretty good cook now that she's on her on in Mississippi. One night we decided to collaborate on a Tamale Pie. The results were wonderful. All you need to add is a salad and maybe a little sour cream on the side...muy bueno!
  • 1 pound lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 large green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 large can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 large can (28 ounces) tomatoes, cut up
  • 1 can (16 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained
  • 1 can black beans, drained
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • dash black pepper
  • 1 cup grated Cheddar or Mexican blend cheese.
Crust (or you can just mix up a package of cornbread mix according to directions):
  • 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup grated Cheddar or Mexican blend cheese, for topping (optional)
Brown ground beef with onions and green pepper; drain well. Add tomato sauce, tomatoes, corn, black beans, garlic, sugar, salt, chili powder and black pepper. Heat to boiling; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for about 20 minutes, or until thickened. Add cheese; stir until cheese is melted. Set filling aside.

In a saucepan, combine cornmeal, salt, water and chili powder. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick. Stir in butter. Spread filling into a baking dish, about 12- x 8-inches. Spoon cornmeal mixture over filling. Bake at 375° for 45 minutes. If desired, sprinkle 1/2 cup cheese over the crust about 5 minutes before casserole is done.

Supposed to serve 6; at our house, it serves 4.
