Sorry this is a little late coming to you this week. I took off the first full weekend in recent memory and spent time with my family- Molly was home from Mississippi to celebrate her 24th (!) birthday and we all traveled back in time to the Renaissance Festival...good times!

Wal-Mart Warning

For the last couple of weeks I've told you about how Wal-Mart charged me twice for the same purchase. Their customer service people were less than helpful and I ended up having to file a fraud affidavit with my bank. Just thought I'd let you know, my money was finally returned to my bank account last Tuesday with no apology or word of explanation. Folks, learn from my experience-- DON'T pay by check at Wal-Mart.

If something goes wrong, you get no help from them.

Waffles!

For Molly's birthday breakfast, we dusted off the waffle iron and made blueberry waffles for the first time in years. I had forgotten how much better the homemade variety is compared to the toaster type. You can freeze leftovers, too.

Wise Words

"Most of us wonder if our lives made any difference. Soldiers don't have that problem."

Next to New is now on Facebook! Click here to go to our fan page and join up. We'll be posting great deals when we find them during the week and linking to other great frugal sites. We'll have the Deal of the Day and any other Hot Flashes that come our way.

Remember to bring in your plastic grocery bags to recycle and register to win a $25.00 store credit.

Get a $5.00 store credit any time you bring us a new shopper. It's easy. Just bring in your friends who've never tried N2N shopping. When they check out at the register, we'll give YOU a $5.00 credit on the spot.

Let's work to get the word out: friends don't let friends shop retail!

...and don't forget Senior Discount Day- each Monday, everyone 55 and over gets 30% off their cash purchases.

Since the economy began it's precipitous nosedive, N2N has been doing all of it's buying in exchange for credit in the shop. That move has kept us solvent and in business while so many other shops have folded.
Now, we've decided to stick our toes back into the cash buying waters...

Here's how it works: for cash, we're purchasing only name brand, mall brand and better fashions. We're only taking in-season pieces (spring/summer). They must be in perfect condition and have been bought new less than three years ago.

Just give me a call at the shop (770-534-9070) or on my cell (770-539-1911) I'll need to set up an appointment since I'm currently the only one who is doing the cash buying. I'm giving preference to areas of the shop that have the quickest turn-over in inventory- plus sizes, maternity, men's casual wear, shoes and toddler sizes.

Of course, we're still continuing the store credit buying and the amount we pay is about 30% more than the cash.

Cash or store credit- either way, we all win!

Computer Problems?

Computer House Calls will rid your system of viruses and malware and tune up your computer so it runs faster than the day you bought it. Arthur can sit down with you and teach you what YOU want to learn about your computer. Service is fast, friendly and personalized. If you run into him at N2N feel free to ask him about your computer. he loves to talk tech.

Arthur says there are LOTS of forms of malware circulating the Internet lately, so be sure your system is protected. Drop him a note or give him a call-

Chocolate Chip Pecan Blondies

A perfect take-along to picnics and family reunions.

Nonstick vegetable oil spray
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Heat oven to 350° F. Spray an 8-inch square baking pan with the nonstick spray.

Line the pan with a piece of parchment, leaving an overhang on two sides; spray the parchment with the nonstick spray.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
In a large bowl, whisk together the butter and sugars, then whisk in the eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour mixture, then the pecans and chocolate chips.

Spread the batter in the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes.

Cool completely in the pan. Holding both sides of the paper overhang, lift the cake out of the pan, transfer to a cutting board, and cut into 16 squares.

Food Blog of the Week

The Smitten Kitchen features fearless cooking from a tiny kitchen in New York City. It focuses on a lot of comfort foods stepped up a bit, things like bread and birthday cakes made entirely from scratch and tutorials on everything from how to poach an egg to how to make tart doughs that don’t shrink up on you, but also a favorite side dish (zucchini and almonds) that takes less than five minutes to make.

The author is wary of fussy foods and/or pretentious ingredients. She doesn't do truffle oil, Himalayan pink salt at $10 per quarter-ounce or single-origin chocolate that can only be found through Posh Nosh-approved purveyors. She thinks food should be accessible, and is certain that you don’t need any of these things to cook fantastically. I think she's my new best friend.

Wal-Mart Warning

Last week I made a large purchase (almost $200) at the Wal-Mart on Shallowford Road. I paid by check (big mistake.) It was one of those long desk-style checks and the electronic check printer kept spitting it back out until the edges were mangled and the account number was unreadable. I finally wrote another check after I was assured the first check hadn't been processed.

I bet you can see where I'm going here...yep- BOTH checks cleared my bank account yesterday. I immediately went to Wal-Mart where I was told that the problem was my bank, not Wal-Mart. Then I trekked to my bank where they had incontrovertible proof that Wal-Mart had taken my money twice. Since Wal-Mart still would do nothing to correct the problem, I had to file a fraud affidavit at my bank. It'll be weeks before I see my money.
Life lesson: Never pay by check at Wal-Mart. And remember, at the house Sam Walton built, customer service is an oxymoron.
