New columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on May 1st. Click
here to read Arthur's piece on using safe mode to track down problems in your computer.
BTW- do you have computer questions and you're not sure who to ask? Drop Arthur an email ( or give him a call at 770-540-5100. He'll be happy to help. Don't be shy- he lives for this stuff.

My column on the need to preserve the Governor's Honors Program was published on April 30th. Click here to see it. (BTW- after the column was published, funding was allotted for a 4 week GHP in the summer of 2011...not the 6 week program that needed, but it's better than a stick in the eye!)

Time on your hands?

Play Tetris and Scrabble — sorry, "Blockies" and "Letterblox" — with friends or strangers right in your browser window. OMGPOP is like an arcade where you never run out of quarters or people to play with. It's a highly addictive waste of time, even if the games are just copyright rip-offs of old faves.

Vote Early and Often!

I Love Local Commercials is a group that makes...wait for it...wait for it...local commercials! They're holding a contest to choose a local business somewhere in the USA- and they'll make a free commercial for them. Well, I think N2N is the perfect candidate. If you do, too, click here to nominate us. And then click here to see one of their hilarious (whether it's intentional or not)'s gone viral on You Tube! Oh, and be sure to click here to see the details of the making of this epic.

Sister, You Are Beautiful!

On May 8 2010 The Genesis Council of the Newtown Florist Club will celebrate their daughters. This project is dedicated to improving the mental, physical and spiritual health of young women in our community. The girls range in age from 15 to 18. They have participated in weekly community service projects and health sessions monthly. At the end of the program the hard work pays off for the young ladies when they are presented to the community during an ancient Ghanan coming of age ritual, the Sankofa Celebration which combines May Day Festivities and a Cotillion Ball.

The morning of May 8 they will celebrate May Day at Fair Street Elementary School. That evening they will be presented to the world as Belles of The Sister You are Beautiful Program at the Gainesville Civic Center. Congratulations to these wonderful, accomplished young women and their advisor, Qiana Keith. For more information and tickets to the Ball, click

What's for Dinner?

Boneless chicken continues to be one of the enduring meat bargains- usually you can find it for under $2.00/ lb. Here's a great recipe that utilizes an unexpected combination of ingredients. Chicken breasts are pounded thin and coated with a mustard mixture, dredged in crushed pretzels, and baked until golden brown in this recipe. Click here to try it.
