What's New?

Oh.My.Gosh. Last Saturday, we got in over 200 pieces of absolutely GORGEOUS ladies' size 14-16-18-L-XL-1X fashions. You know the name brands- Kim Rogers, Rafaella, Jessica Howard, AGB, New Directions, Ronni Nicole....many, many more.

Going to a wedding? We have a dress for you! Easter Sunday? Sure thing! Job interview? Ditto! Saturday with the family? That, too! We've even had to add another rack to accommodate them all.

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Too Sweet for Type 1

Our daughter, Rachel, a freshman at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In the weeks since her diagnosis, she's made a remarkable adjustment to insulin injections, blood sugar monitoring and a low-carbohydrate diet.

Here's the quandary: her father, Arthur, and I are both self-employed. For us, health insurance is outrageously expensive and comes with a high deductible. To help meet Rachel's deductible, we're holding the Too Sweet for Type 1 Fundraiser. On Friday, March 1st there will be a store wide half price sale at N2N. But that's not all. There will be extended hours (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.) There will raffles and prizes, a bake sale, celebrity authors signing their books, goodie bags with diabetes information and lots of freebies...and more, much more.

Leading up to the fundraiser, we'll be selling raffle tickets- $1.00 each. We'll be drawing for prizes all day on March 1st and you don't have to be present to win. Please stop in and buy a hand full. It all goes to help Rachel.

We also have some pretty amazing items that have been donated- collectible Barbies (Flamingo, Couture, Evening Sophisticate- even two I Love Lucy Barbies!), a hand painted child's rocking chair, autographed photos of Chandler Massey (Will Horton on "Days Of Our Lives"), books signed by authors Lauretta Hannon ("The Cracker Queen") and Fred Fussell, vintage accessories and more. They're available for a suggested donation that's far less than the actual retail price...so come take a look!

Closer to Free

Oh, I do so love a flash mob. The ones at weddings singing numbers from "Les Mes", the ones in malls singing the "Hallelujah Chorus." But this one...this one is special. On November 20, 2012, a group of cancer survivors, doctors and caregivers from Smilow Cancer Hospital, along with the Fairfield Children’s Choir and a troupe of stage performers, came together at Union Station in New Haven.

They were there to celebrate personal triumph. And to celebrate life. The event was a flash mob - a live, spontaneous performance that helped draw attention to their mission of making the world cancer free. Click here to see the performance. Click here to read more about Closer to Free.


Art With Heart

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia is hosting Art with Heart 2013, a benefit art auction, Friday, February 15, from 7-10 p.m. 2013 is the fourth year for this fundraising event with all proceeds supporting HSNEGA’s animal rescue and adoption programs and the shelter’s work to end companion animal overpopulation and suffering.

The benefit will take place at the Elks Club in Gainesville, located on Riverside Drive. The event will feature fine art, folk art, pottery, fine woodworking, sculpture and other types of artwork donated by renowned national and regional artists. All artwork will be available for silent auction during the event.

Non-art auction items--including a houseboat cruise on Lake Lanier, a birthday party at HSNEGA and a spa package--also will be available to bid on during the event. The event will also feature many artwork items for immediate sale at the event including jewelry, prints and pottery. Many items will start at $5 or $10.

Tickets for the event are $40 per person. A limited number of tickets are available for the event; the requested RSVP date was Friday, February 8 but there may still be tickets available-contact Julie Edwards, HSNEGA Director of Development & Marketing, at 770-532-6617 or JulieEdwards@HSNEGA.org. Ticket price includes heavy hor d’oeuvres and a complimentary wine bar.

When Molly went off to Jackson to work for the Institute of Southern Jewish Life, I put together a recipe blog for her. Recipes for Molly in Mississippi features many of the family favorites that she's grown up with and it's become a go-to resource whenever we're putting together a reunion dinner or deciding what to fix for Thanksgiving.

Now that Rachel's off at school it was time to start a recipe blog for her, too.
