Baked Apples with Cinnamon Sauce

5 tablespoons softened butter
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
4 apples (any variety but Red Delicious) peeled, halved, and cored, a thin sliver cut off bottoms so apples sit flat
1 (15 ounce) container 9-inch pie crusts
1 egg white
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cornstarch

Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 425 degrees.
Mix 3 Tbs. of butter, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon and all the nuts in a small bowl. Spoon a portion of the mixture into each hollowed-out apple core.
For boxed pie crusts, unroll one of the dough sheets onto a floured work surface. Pulling on sides of dough to straighten rounded edges, roll it into an approximate 12-inch square, then cut the dough into four 6-inch squares; brush the perimeter of each square with egg white. Set an apple half on each square. Bring up the 4 corners of dough around the apple and pinch edges to seal. Place on a large (at least 18- by 12-inch) parchment-covered baking dish. Brush dumpling tops and sides with egg white; sprinkle with sugar. Repeat process with remaining apples and dough.

Bake dumplings until pastry sets and starts to turn golden brown, about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 and bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes longer.
While apples bake, bring 1 cup water, the remaining 2 Tbs. butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp. cinnamon to boil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Dissolve cornstarch in 2 tsps. water; whisk into hot syrup for a smooth sauce. Cover, keep warm.

For each serving, spoon a portion of sauce on a dessert plate. Set apple dumpling over warm sauce; serve immediately.

Weekly this 'n' that

The Gainesville Evening Optimist Club's 53rd Annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Fundraiser is in full swing. You'll find beautiful trees of all sizes and hand crafted wreaths at the tree lot on Browns Bridge Road next to Gallery (Wolfman's) Furniture. The Gainesville Evening Optimist Club is dedicated to serving the kids of our area and your tree purchase helps further that mission. Stop by the tree lot any time...if there's no one there, you can just pick out your tree and drop a check through the "Honest John" slot in the door. How's that for easy?

It's heartwarming to see how many people step up to help others during this season of giving. We get lots of folks in shopping for needy families. May I make a suggestion? Why not give a N2N gift certificate as part of your Angel Tree gift? I've discovered that often those who would most benefit from resale shopping don't know about us. They spend their meager clothing budget at cut-rate discount stores where the clothing is poorly made and wears out in no time. The same money goes MUCH further here at N2N and the items are well-made name brands and mall brands that are far more durable and (IMHO) cuter, too. We'll be glad to convert some of your store credit into a gift certificate or sell you a credit to use as part of your Christmas giving. You'll know the recipient will be able to find great fashions and learn about the many benefits of resale shopping at the same time. Now, that's the gift that keeps on giving!

We're still collecting both essentials and goodies to send to SSgt Latessa Bortner in Saudi Arabia. So far, the response has been wonderful- you've donated enough for us to send seven large flat rate priority boxes!

Packages will be going out to Latessa each Wednesday so please keep the goodies coming in!

Remember to bring in your plastic grocery bags to recycle and register to win a $25.00 store credit. October's winner is ANNA BELLE ILLIEN.

If you'd like to be added to the N2N Hot Flash list and receive freebie and bargain alerts during the week, just email me at
next2new@aol.com.

Each week, we'll be doing cash buying for one area in the shop that really needs inventory. This week it's SHOES.

We'll be buying shoes for cash all week- through Thursday, December 3rd. Check next week's newsletter to see what the next buy-for-cash department will be.

Get a $5.00 store credit any time you bring us a new shopper. It's easy. Just bring in your friends who've never tried N2N shopping. When they check out at the register, we'll give YOU a $5.00 credit on the spot.

THEN- at the end of the month we'll hold a drawing of names of everyone who brought us new shoppers. That winner gets a $50.00 store credit. Also, if you brought us the MOST new shoppers, you'll get a $50.00 store credit.

The winner of the $50.00 credit drawing is LYNNE SPICER. Last month's winner for bringing us the most new shoppers (5!) is ELAINE MINTER. Come on over and get your $50.00 credits, ladies!

Let's work to get the word out: friends don't let friends shop retail!
