New Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on November 7th. Click here to read Arthur's piece on speeding up you PC bit by bit.

My October 30th column is about Hallowe'en and our friend Latessa in Saudia Arabia (there really is a connection there- I promise!) Click

Veteran's Day

On November 11th, we take time to honor, remember, recognize and thank those who have so bravely served our country. Click
here to see a touching Veteran's Day montage.

November 11 is also celebrated in Great Britain and Canada as Remembrance Day. Click

Picking up the pieces

Crash! Your heirloom vase just took a dive and is now resting in pieces. The end. Or is it just the beginning? With a folk craft known as "
pique assiette," or shard art, you can give the pieces new life as a mosaic picture frame, flowerpot, tabletop or whatever you can dream up. Click here to get started.

Stop by Toys R Us this week for a great deal on Hasbro games. Here’s the scoop: Hasbro has teamed up with Toys R Us to offer $69 in
mail-in rebates on games.

After rebate you’ll be able to get preschool games like Candy Land, Chutes & Ladders, Memory, Hi Ho Cherry-O, Don’t Break the Ice and Ants in the Pants for just $1.99.

You’ll pay $3.99 at Toys R Us, but each is eligible for a $2 rebate. Even better, when you spend $25 on Hasbro games, you’ll get a $10 Toys R Us gift card.

Here’s what you could do:

Buy 7 games for $27.93.

Apply for $14 in rebates ($2 for each game)

Receive a $10 gift card

Spend $3.93 on 7 games!

You must purchase only one of each $3.99 game since you can only apply for each rebate once. Also, the themed or character versions of the games are not eligible for this rebate offer (e.g., Disney Princess edition of Chutes & Ladders).

There’s also a coupon on the front of this week’s Toys R Us ad to get you a $10 gift card when you spend $75 or more.

Cranberry Puffs

Yummy cranberry and cream cheese filled wontons. A little sweet, a little spicy...a perfect snack for the holidays

Ingredients
3/4 cup fresh cranberries
1 jalapeno pepper, stem removed
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (14 ounce) package wonton wrappers
3 cups canola oil for frying
Directions
In a food processor, combine the cranberries, jalapeno pepper, sugar and mayonnaise. Process until smooth. This will be your cranberry relish. Set aside half of this mixture, and pour the rest into a medium bowl. Mix cream cheese into this half until well blended.

Lay a few wonton wrappers at a time out on a clean surface. Spoon about 1 teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture onto the center of each one. Pinch the corners together to make a triangle shape. If they don't stick, wet them with a little water using your finger. Set aside on a piece of waxed paper while you assemble the remaining puffs.

Heat the oil in a large deep skillet over medium to medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, carefully set 5 to 10 of the dumplings in the pan. Do not over crowd the pan. Fry on each side until golden brown. Remove from the hot oil using tongs and place on paper towels to drain. Serve on a platter with the reserved cranberry relish as a dipping sauce. The sooner you eat them, the better they taste.

If you'd rather, you can bake them for for 15 minutes at 375. Turn them over and bake for 5 more minutes.

Last Word

Weekly this 'n' that

We're still collecting both essentials and goodies to send to SSgt Latessa Bortner in Saudi Arabia. So far, the response has been wonderful- you've donated enough for us to send four large flat rate priority boxes!

Avon consultant Ree Browning even had us find out how many women were serving with Latessa (there are five) and she sent a box stuffed full of Avon products for them. Thanks so much, Ree! BTW- Ree's having an Avon Open House each Friday and Saturday in November (9am-4pm) in her home at 6213 Browning Road in North Hall. It's a great way to get a jump on holiday shopping. Call Ree at 770-983-7235 for directions and more info.

Packages will be going out to Latessa each Wednesday so please keep the goodies coming in!

Remember to bring in your plastic grocery bags to recycle and register to win a $25.00 store credit. October's winner is ANNA BELLE ILLIEN.

If you'd like to be added to the N2N Hot Flash list and receive freebie and bargain alerts during the week, just email me at
next2new@aol.com.

Each week, we'll be doing cash buying for one area in the shop that really needs inventory. This week it's COSTUME JEWELRY.

We'll be buying costume jewelry for cash all week- through Thursday, November 12th. Check next week's newsletter to see what the next buy-for-cash department will be.

Get a $5.00 store credit to you any time you bring us a new shopper. It's easy. Just bring in your friends who've never tried N2N shopping. When they check out at the register, we'll give YOU a $5.00 credit on the spot.

THEN- at the end of the month we'll hold a drawing of names of everyone who brought us new shoppers. That winner gets a $50.00 store credit. Also, if you brought us the MOST new shoppers, you'll get a $50.00 store credit.

The winner of the $50.00 credit drawing is LYNNE SPICER. This month's winner for bringing us the most new shoppers (5!) is ELAINE MINTER. Come on over and get your $50.00 credits, ladies!

Let's work to get the word out: friends don't let friends shop retail!
