Good morning!

I'll try to keep things updated with links and special savings on our Facebook page. If you haven't "liked" us, now's a good time. Just click here.

New Columns!

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

My column, "Workplace can spark a kid’s imagination" ran on Friday, April 27th.

Arthur's column, "Hard now to imagine living without a smartphone" was published last Saturday. Click here to read it.

Feeling Crafty?

When I first saw this blog, I was totally charmed by the sweet sewing kit made from a jelly jar and bits of this and that. It's a thoughtful little gift to send with kids on their way to college or just starting out in the world. Click here to see.

Class of 2012

It's graduation time! Here at N2N, we've watched so many of the current grads grow up and we're proud of each and every one of you!
Everyone wants to look their best for those graduation day photos, so here's our little gift to you: Bring your graduation gown by N2N any time before May 15th and we'll steam out the wrinkles for you. Those package folds can be stubborn but they're no match for our steamer!
We just ask that you stick around while we do it- no drop offs, please.
There's no charge- just our way of telling you congratulations!

Puppy Love

Julie Edwards of the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia made a Facebook post of this great link full of tips on things you should do and consider before adopting a dog. Super advice!

Improv This!

Coming, next Friday night- the final improv show of the year! Join North Hall High School's Improv Team (Improv This!) for a night of controlled chaos, inspired characters, and magical uncertainty as the team's senior members introduce their favorite games in their farewell show.

Tickets are $5, and all proceeds go to Hope for the Homeless, a project of Tessa Shirley's freshman classes working to raise awareness, clothing, money, and hope for the homeless and at risk in our area.

Come out and support these talented Improv-ers and your community!
Friday, May 4th at 7:30 pm in the NHHS theatre.

21 Uses for Vodka

Thought vodka was just for Bloody Marys? Think again...

And another use for vinegar:

Looking for a weed killer that's already in your pantry? Reach for the vinegar.

Whatcha Eatin'?

Here's a nice spin on the classic lemon meringue pie recipe...

Orange Meringue Pie

1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup cornstarch
1 pinch salt
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup water
4 eggs, separated
4 tablespoons butter or margarine, cut into pieces
2 teaspoons grated orange zest
1/2 cup diced orange segments
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Line pastry with aluminum foil and a layer of pie weights or dried beans. Bake in the preheated oven until edge of crust is golden, about 10 minutes. Carefully remove the foil and weights; bake about 5 minutes more.
  2. In a small saucepan, stir together the 3/4 cup sugar, 1/3 cup cornstarch, and salt. Mix in the orange juice, lemon juice, and water. Whisk in the egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until thick and bubbly, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in butter and orange zest. If desired; stir in diced orange segments. Pour into prepared pie crust, cover with plastic wrap, and set aside to cool.
  3. When pie filling has cooled to room temperature, preheat oven and prepare meringue. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a large glass or metal bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and cream of tartar, continuing to beat until stiff peaks form. Lift your beater or whisk straight up: the egg whites should form a sharp peak that holds its shape. Spread over pie, making sure the meringue completely covers the filling and meets the edges of the pie crust.
  4. Bake in preheated oven until meringue topping is golden brown, about 15 minutes.

Wise Words

What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but, scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.
