Current Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Gainesville Times. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on April 3rd. Clic

My April 2nd column is about the pervasiveness of urban legends. Click here to go to it.

5 Uses for...

Learn how to make the most of common household items like hair dryers, dryer sheets and toothpicks, when you watch Womans Day's 5 Ways video series. Each week they feature a different item, which you most likely have lying around the house, and show you five new uses for it—surprising even the most savvy homemaker. For instance, did you know the absorbent powders in sidewalk chalk can soak up stains on clothing? Or that dryer sheets can calm frizzy-hair flyaways? Click
to learn more.

Raising Ruby

Ruby is a Golden/Lab puppy on her way to becoming a service dog for an individual with a disability. Raising Ruby is a blog detailing her 18 months of training- fascinating, fun reading! Click here.

Passive Aggressive Notes

Molly introduced me to this little blog that will quickly eat up an hour or two of your time. Part voyeuristic entertainment, part group therapy, Passive Aggressive Notes offers a fascinating look at the all-too-familiar frustrations of embattled office workers, apartment dwellers, parents, and pet owners everywhere.

My favorite so far is the sign is a store that reads "We offer extremely high quality and extremely low prices. Pick one." Click here to read more.

The old way of cooking at home included figuring out what you wanted to eat, looking up the recipe in a cookbook, buying the ingredients and whipping the meal up.

Here's the Supercook way: Open your fridge and pantry, type the ingredients you have into the site's search bar and stand back. Supercook will look through its database of 300,000-plus recipes and spit out the ones that match. The result? You can start cooking right away, using food that would otherwise spoil. It's a painless alternative to traditional menu-planning and a great way to find new recipes and economize at the same time.
To try it out, I did a search featuring ground turkey and spaghetti sauce. Up popped 2000 recipes using those ingredients. I settled on Easy Unstuffed Cabbage for the Crockpot. Click here to see it. Click here to go to the Supercook home page.

Wise Words

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

(I don't have a clue who said this but thanks to Bruce Fitch who published it in this week's edition of the Gainesville Optimist Club's Opti-Topics)
