Latest Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

His latest was published on July 24th. Click
here to read about tweaking your wireless network.

My July 23rd column takes on the issue of giving children food while shopping. Click here to read it.

Scavenger Hunt

Learn about monuments and markers "hidden in plain sight," and hints to search for local monuments and markers. Scavenger Hunt at the Northeast Georgia History Center (322 Academy Street) begins at 1:30 p.m. There will be other activities also.

This is the first in a series of History Center events focusing on monuments and markers, and the beginning of an ongoing project to document markers in NE GA. For more information, call 770-297-5900 or email jcarson@brenau.edu.

Admission is free, courtesy of N GA Eye Clinic and Laser Center. Thanks, Dr. Payne!

Looking for Love?

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia (HSNEGA) is offering special adoption fees for all adult, large dogs and adult cats and kittens adopted at the shelter from Saturday, July 17—Sunday, August 29, 2010. Typically $100 per animal, the adoption fee for adult dogs will be $50 per dog, and adult cats and kittens will be available to adopt at $100 for two animals
(two cats, two kittens or one cat/one kitten).

All adoptable animals at HSNEGA are current on their vaccinations, fecal tested/dewormed, heartworm tested, are up-to-date on heartworm and flea/tick preventative, health-checked, and, most importantly, spayed or neutered.

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia (845 West Ridge Rd.) is open for adoptions Mon.-Sat. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Check out the adoption section of the
Website to see all the animals available for adoption, or for more information, please contact HSNEGA at 770-532-6617.
Bring in your adoption form from any area shelter (within one week of the adoption) and get a $10.00 N2N store credit...just our way thanking you for saving a life!

Surviving the Stores

If you only save one coupon and freebie site, make sure it's Surviving the Stores. It's the most comprehensive and well organized site of it's kind that I've seen in a long time. I'm especially impressed with the restaurant coupon section. You can also sign up to get email, Twitter and Facebook updates.

And while we're talking coupons...

A few months ago, a printable coupon for a free box of Velveeta cheese circulated through in boxes all over the Internet. It looked legit but it was actually a fraud, leading to lots of embarrassing encounters at the check-out counter. Now there's a way to verify those printable coupons. Click here to go to Veri-Fi. Just type in the code printed on the coupon and it'll tell you if it's kosher or not.

Connect the Dots

You probably did it as a kid. It's simple and it's fun. Click here to create a work of art by uploading a photo and turning it into a connect-the-dots masterpiece. Then you can send it to your friends and ask them to solve it...

Stressbusters

Feeling stressed? Honey, aren't we all? iVillage Health has a surprisingly no-nonsense slide show on 8 ways to reduce stress and guess what? It works! I'm especially impressed with the difference the breathing exercises make...click here to give it a try!

Cooking for Engineers

For the most part, if you've seen one recipe site, you've seen them all. That's what I thought until I stumbled across Cooking for Engineers. It has detailed instructions on food and cooking for those who like to ask not just "how?" but also "why?"

It features step by step photographs and a cool tabular recipe card that lists all the ingredients and preparation actions in an easy-to-understand, visual way. The recipe for homemade mayonnaise includes the best explanation of emulsions I've seen since taking Mr. Shelton's chemistry class way back when!

Click here to try making you own mayonnaise.

Wise Words

Life is a shipwreck but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats. --Voltaire

N2N wants you to like us...on Facebook! Click here to go to our fan page and click "like" to join up. We post great deals when we find them during the week and link to other great frugal sites. We have the Deal of the Day and Hot Flashes...you sure don't want to miss out on that!

We'll be doing more drawings for credits and other goodies on a regular basis, so be sure to get in on the action!

Remember to bring in your plastic grocery bags to recycle and register to win a $25.00 store credit. The winner for July is Lela Wade. Congratulations, Lela!

Get a $5.00 store credit any time you bring us a new shopper. It's easy. Just bring in your friends who've never tried N2N shopping. When they check out at the register, we'll give YOU a $5.00 credit on the spot.

Let's work to get the word out: friends don't let friends shop retail!

...and don't forget Senior Discount Day- each Monday, everyone 55 and over gets 30% off their cash purchases.

Computer Problems?

Arthur can fix your computer, rid it of viruses and malware or tune it up for you. He'll make it run faster than it did when you first bought it. You can drop it off at N2N or he can do a house call. He writes a column on computer care for The Times every other Saturday. You can visit his blog at http://computerhousecalls.blogspot.com/ to see an archive of columns, searchable by keywords.

Most times he will have your computer back to you within two days and his rates include a free follow-up phone consultation.

Call Computer House Calls at 770-540-5100 or email him at arthur@glazerthepctech.com. Your computer will thank you.

That's it for now. Remember-email goes both ways...

If you run across any exceptional bargains or impressive new products, let us know. We'll put the word out!

Have a remarkable week!
