Columns

My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Arthur's latest was published on April 2. Click here to read "When updating registry, back up before going forward."
My column, published April 1, is "When it comes to April Fool's pranks, one was just sick." Click here.

Storing Your Winter Stuff

Spring cleaning isn’t just decluttering and dusting—it’s also the time when you should store away winter wear. But it’s not as simple as tossing your sweaters and afghans to the back of the closet; you’ve got some work to do if you want to protect your garments and blankets for future seasons. To minimize damage and the presence of pests, click here to learn the best way to store seasonal goods.

Summer Camp Expo

It's time to start considering summer programs. At 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday April 13. there will be a Summer camp Expo. It'll be at the Family Life Center, behind First Baptist Church of Gainesville on Green Street. It's hosted by MOMS Club of Gainesville.and is open to the community.

Camps present at the expo include Elachee Nature Center, Family Life Center, Funderful World of Music, Gainesville Library, Gainesville Parks and Recreation, Gainesville School of Ballet, Hall County Parks and Leisure, Lake Lanier Islands Equestrian Center, Lakeview Academy, The Creative Canvas Art Studio and more. Childcare is available for $2 per child, maximum of 3 per family.

Bears repeating...

For the longest time, I've grumbled that sites like Groupon and Living Social focus too much on the Atlanta area, that there needed to be a discount program for the North Georgia area. Well now there is. It works like this:

Local residents will have the opportunity to save money while shopping locally by taking advantage of a "Deal of the Day" on the Gainesville Times website.

The Deal of the Day will offer dramatically discounted pricing on items made available by local merchants.

You can click here to sign up to get an email announcement of each new deal.

Once you see a deal you like, all you have to do is make the purchase online with a credit card. Within 24 hours of completion of the deal, you will be able to print a voucher for the service purchased, which then can be presented to the business offering the special deal.

Last week I bought several $20.00 Subway gift cards for just $10.00 each. I can't wait to see what the next deal is!

Whatcha eatin' ?

This week Ingles has 5 lb. bags of new red potatoes for just $2.98. Here's a great recipe that spotlights that bargain:

New Red Potato Salad

3 pounds unpeeled red potatoes
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups mayonnaise
2 tablespoons milk
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish or chopped dill pickles (your choice)
1/2 cup sliced green onions
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup sliced celery

    1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add red potatoes, and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain, cool and chop into 1 inch cubes. Place in a medium bowl.
    2. Place eggs in a medium saucepan, and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil, and immediately remove from heat. Cover, and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and dice.
    3. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, milk, distilled white vinegar, green onions, salt and pepper. Pour the mixture over the potatoes, and mix together with the eggs, celery, relish or chopped pickles. Cover, and chill in the refrigerator approximately 2 hours before serving.

    Message from Arthur:

Arthur says there are many forms of malware circulating the Internet. Some remain hidden in your computer, wreaking havoc with your system. Others appear as bogus utilities, warning you of non-existent problems. Often they will even give you a specific number of issues - something not possible if you hadn't run any scans with that utility. Others yet, are random pop-ups that you can't close. These all must be dealt with immediately. If they disappear on their own, they will return. They are not self-healing. If not eradicated, they will get worse, eventually blocking you from logging on to Windows, in many cases.

Call Arthur at 770-540-5100 or email him at arthur@glazerthepctech.com if you need to set up an appointment. He guarantees his work, has rapid response times and reasonable rates. You've read his columns in the Times, now let him go to work for you.

That's it for now. Remember-email goes both ways...

If you run across any exceptional bargains or impressive new products, let us know. We'll put the word out!
