My husband, Arthur, and I each write twice-a-month columns for The Times here in Gainesville. His deal with computing and technology issues. Mine deal with whatever strikes my fancy.

Arthur's latest was published on April 2. Click here to read "When updating registry, back up before going forward."

My column, published April 1, is "When it comes to April Fool's pranks, one was just sick." Click here.

I spotted this on Face Book- Bruce Sellers, the director of choral and vocal studies at Gainesville State College posted it. I just had to share. This Rube Goldberg type device makes all the music, an astonishing version of Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." It's for a commercial selling cell phones, of all things. This you've gotta see.

For the longest time, I've grumbled that sites like Groupon and Living Social focus too much on the Atlanta area, that there needed to be a discount program for the North Georgia area. Well now there is. It works like this:

Local residents will have the opportunity to save money while shopping locally by taking advantage of a "Deal of the Day" on the Gainesville Times website.

The Deal of the Day will offer dramatically discounted pricing on items made available by local merchants.

You can click here to sign up to get an email announcement of each new deal.

Once you see a deal you like, all you have to do is make the purchase online with a credit card. Within 24 hours of completion of the deal, you will be able to print a voucher for the service purchased, which then can be presented to the business offering the special deal.

I'm so excited about this, both as a shopper and as a merchant. Don't be surprised if you see a N2N deal on there in the near future!

Congratulations, Rachel! She's been chosen to be a 2011 Bronfman Youth Fellow. She and 25 other rising high school seniors from the US and Canada will spent five weeks this summer traveling throughout Israel, meeting and studying with leading scholars, artists, writers and national decision makers. She's going to have a life-changing summer.
Her mom's going to be a basket case.

Happy birthday (April 3) to Arthur!

On April 1, Cheryl's daughter, Lindsay Hughes, turned 23. On April 2 she said "Yes" to becoming Mrs. Kyle Bagwell. Congratulations on all counts, Lindz!

Whatcha eatin' ?

Last week I had a fruit bowl full of over-ripe bananas. It was time to make banana bread. I didn't feel up to all the measuring and sifting that the standard recipe requires so I found a great short-cut.
I used cake mix as a base and then just tossed everything together in the food processor. It was actually better than the scratch recipe that I ordinarily make.

5 ripe bananas
1 (18 1/2 oz.) box yellow cake mix ( I used a coconut cake mix and it was wonderful- you can actually use any light-colored cake mix)
3 eggs
1/3 cup oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/2 cup raisins, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl (or food processor) mash bananas and add remaining ingredients. With electric beater, mix two minutes at medium speed or mix in the food processor until mixed well.
Pour into buttered 5 x 9 inch loaf pan and bake one hour or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Wise Words

For Lindsay and Kyle and all you lovers out there:
A bell is no bell 'til you ring it,
A song is no song 'til you sing it,
And love in your heart
Wasn’t put there to stay -
Love isn’t love
'Til you give it away.

~Oscar Hammerstein, Sound of Music, "You Are Sixteen"

New message from Arthur:

Arthur says there are many forms of malware circulating the Internet. Some remain hidden in your computer, wreaking havoc with your system. Others appear as bogus utilities, warning you of non-existent problems. Often they will even give you a specific number of issues - something not possible if you hadn't run any scans with that utility. Others yet, are random pop-ups that you can't close. These all must be dealt with immediately. If they disappear on their own, they will return. They are not self-healing. If not eradicated, they will get worse, eventually blocking you from logging on to Windows, in many cases.

Call Arthur at 770-540-5100 or email him at arthur@glazerthepctech.com if you need to set up an appointment. He guarantees his work, has rapid response times and reasonable rates. You've read his columns in the Times, now let him go to work for you.

That's it for now. Remember-email goes both ways...

If you run across any exceptional bargains or impressive new products, let us know. We'll put the word out!
